Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am submitting this petition to respectfully request a second deferral of my previously deferred BIOL 103 final examination due to significant mental health issues resulting from ongoing domestic abuse and family-related circumstances beyond my control. These circumstances have had a serious and prolonged impact on my psychological well-being, daily functioning, and academic performance throughout this academic period, particularly during the time surrounding my deferred examination.
Over the past several months, I have been dealing with an unstable and emotionally harmful home environment that significantly affected my mental health, including verbal and physical abuse. The ongoing stress associated with these circumstances contributed to persistent anxiety, emotional exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, disrupted sleep, and periods of overwhelming distress. As these issues continued, I found it increasingly difficult to maintain the level of focus and emotional stability required to effectively manage my academic responsibilities.
Although I made every effort to continue participating in my courses and remain academically engaged, the effects of these circumstances substantially impaired my ability to prepare for and complete my deferred BIOL 103 and CHEM 112 final examinations. In particular, the period leading up to the exam was marked by heightened psychological distress that interfered with my ability to study consistently and retain information. I experienced significant difficulty focusing for extended periods of time, organizing my thoughts, and managing the stress associated with preparing for a cumulative final examination.
The impact of these circumstances extended beyond temporary stress and directly affected my academic functioning on a daily basis. Due to the ongoing instability in my personal environment, I often struggled with emotional dysregulation and persistent anxiety, all of which negatively affected my concentration, memory, and ability to effectively complete academic tasks. Even when attempting to study, I frequently found myself unable to absorb or retain material in a meaningful way. These circumstances also affected my ability to maintain a consistent academic routine during the latter portion of the term and following the original examination period. While I remained committed to my studies and attempted to manage my coursework to the best of my ability, the ongoing psychological effects of the domestic situation significantly limited my ability to perform academically at the level expected of me. The stress and emotional strain associated with the situation became difficult to manage independently and increasingly impacted both my academic and personal functioning.
In response to these circumstances, I have taken steps to address my mental health and seek appropriate support. This has included reaching out for professional assistance from therapists and counselors, and taking measures to improve my emotional well-being and overall stability. Unfortunately, attempting to seek assistance from family and parents has been unsuccessful due to the nature of my home environment. I have also been working toward developing healthier coping strategies and creating a more supportive environment so that I may better manage my academic responsibilities moving forward.
I recognize the seriousness of requesting a second deferral and understand that such requests are considered only under exceptional circumstances. The mental health challenges resulting from these ongoing domestic circumstances significantly impaired my ability to prepare for and complete the deferred BIOL 103 and CHEM 112 final examination. I sincerely believe that these circumstances were beyond my control and had a direct and substantial effect on my academic performance during this period.
For these reasons, I respectfully request consideration for a second deferral of my BIOL 103 final examination. I remain committed to completing the course requirements successfully once I am in a more stable position to do so. Thank you very much for your time, understanding, and consideration of my petition.
