Petition Letter: Petition for late withdrawal from ENIN 240 Summer 2026
I am writing to request permission to withdraw from ENIN 240 after the official drop deadline. I am making this petition on the basis of extenuating circumstances beyond my control that, over an extended period, directly and significantly affected my ability to keep up with and complete the work in this course.
At the beginning of May 2026, my dog passed away. He had been part of my family for ten years and was a constant presence through several of the most difficult periods of my life, including my parents' divorce and a number of moves between homes. His loss was deeply destabilizing for me and for my family, and it affected me far more than I expected. I have a prior history of anxiety and depression, and the grief triggered a recurrence of those struggles, leaving me in a poor headspace and unable to function the way I normally would for several weeks.
This period coincided directly with the active weeks of the course, which is an online course. Because I was struggling day to day, I lost track of the course, missed a major group assignment that carried significant weight toward the final grade, and fell behind on the content. My mental health during this time was also the reason I was unable to address the situation sooner, which is why I am only now bringing this petition forward rather than at the time the difficulties began.
On the day I am submitting this, I reached out to the course instructor directly, hoping she might be able to offer some flexibility. She advised me that the appropriate route was to apply for a late withdrawal, which is why I am submitting this petition. As I have begun to stabilize, I have also taken steps to get back on track: I have completed the most recent quiz and caught up on the course material. Despite these efforts, I was not able to recover the missed assignment, and I do not believe I can complete the course to a standard that reflects my true abilities under the circumstances. For these reasons, I respectfully ask that I be permitted to withdraw from ENIN 240 so that I do not receive a low final grade, given that the missed assignment was worth 45%.
Thank you for considering my petition. I am happy to provide any additional documentation or information the committee requires.
The documentation attached on the next page shows my past mental health history from Sunnybrook hospital, and is the most up to date assessment I have.
Sincerely,
Milana Pupo
