Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to petition for a late withdrawal from GNDS 380, following my professor's recommendation given my extenuating circumstances.
During this term, I experienced significant extenuating circumstances that negatively affected my ability to successfully complete the course. I currently reside and work in Bahrain, where regional conflict and military activity have created an unpredictable and stressful environment. In recent weeks, I have repeatedly been awakened during the night by air defense interceptions, emergency alerts, and concerns regarding regional security. These events disrupted my sleep, concentration, and overall ability to engage consistently with my academic responsibilities.
At the same time, I have been working full-time in the hospitality sector, which brings another layer of uncertainty amid regional dynamics. While I have successfully balanced employment and academic commitments in the past, the combination of a demanding full-time role and the deteriorating regional security situation significantly affected my ability to keep pace with the requirements of GNDS 380.
GNDS 380 was particularly impacted because the course relies heavily on sustained reading, critical reflection, discussion, and written analysis. As the term progressed, I found it increasingly difficult to devote the uninterrupted time and focus necessary to complete the coursework successfully.
I did not withdraw from the course earlier because I believed I would be able to complete the outstanding work. However, as the situation continued, it became clear that completing the course successfully was no longer realistic. After discussing my circumstances and progress in the course, Dr. Jane Tolmie recommended that I pursue a petition for a late withdrawal.
I am returning to Canada this week, and I intend to complete my remaining degree requirements under circumstances that are more conducive to academic success. I remain committed to completing my degree and will be in a stronger position to do so once these extraordinary circumstances have stabilized.
