Petition Letter: Petition to Exceed the Transfer Credit Limit

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to request permission to exceed the current maximum of six transfer credits from another institution and complete additional approved courses through Athabasca University.

I am currently a Computing student registered with accommodations due to a documented mental health disability. Throughout my university studies, my disability has significantly affected my ability to manage a full course load and has caused delays in my academic progress. While I have remained committed to my education and continued working toward my degree, there have been periods where my mental health challenges made it difficult to complete courses at the same pace as my peers. I would have to drop courses and this has caused me to fall behind.

The impact of these challenges has been ongoing throughout my studies and has affected my ability to balance academic responsibilities while maintaining my well being. As a result, I have had to take lighter course loads and make use of accommodations in order to be successful academically. Although these supports have been helpful, they have also extended the amount of time needed to complete my degree requirements. This is because the school of computing no longer provides summer courses.

To address these challenges, I have worked with Student Accessibility Services and sought appropriate support for my mental health. I have also met with advisors in the School of Computing to discuss ways to continue progressing through my degree while reducing the strain associated with a heavier course load.

During these discussions, I was advised that taking approved courses through Athabasca University could be an effective solution. The flexibility of Athabasca’s course offerings would allow me to complete courses during the summer and alongside my regular studies. This would help me spread out my workload, reduce academic pressure during the semester, and make better use of the accommodations and learning strategies that have helped me succeed.

My request is not intended to avoid degree requirements. Rather, it is a way for me to complete those requirements in a manner that is compatible with my documented disability and accommodation needs. Allowing me to transfer additional approved credits from Athabasca University would provide a practical pathway for me to catch up on delayed coursework and continue making steady progress toward graduation.

I am committed to completing my Computing degree and have taken proactive steps to manage the challenges that have affected my academic progress. I respectfully ask that my petition be considered so that I can transfer additional credits from Athabasca University and continue my studies in a way that supports both my academic success and mental health.

I am glad to provide anything needed, or get in contact with student accessibility services to help prove my accommodation.

As well I have been in contact over email with the Associate Dean Dorit Naaman. They said they will gladly help with the situation.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Katrin Kanevsky

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If this petition is granted, I plan to use Athabasca University courses to help distribute my degree requirements over a longer period of time and reduce the number of courses I need to take simultaneously during regular semesters. This will allow me to continue making progress toward my degree while maintaining a manageable workload that is consistent with my accommodation needs.

For example I will take COMP 266 offered by Athabasca University to be transferred in as a CISC 2UNS course. This will help me complete the required courses towards my degree.

As well, I will continue working with Student Accessibility Services and using the accommodations available to me. I also plan to keep maintaining my regular contact with academic advisors in the School of Computing to ensure that my course selection and academic progression remain achievable.

In addition, I will continue accessing the mental health supports that have helped me manage my disability and remain successful in my studies. By combining these supports with a reduced course load and the flexibility provided through approved Athabasca University courses, I believe I will be in a much stronger position to complete my degree requirements successfully and maintain steady academic progress toward graduation.

My goal is to complete my Computing degree while balancing my academic responsibilities with my health needs. Granting this petition would provide me with a practical and sustainable pathway to achieve that goal.
