Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dean of Academics,
I am writing to you to petition to drop GNDS 311, GNDS 320, and ENGL 375A and B. Starting in October 2025 and continuing into the present, I have been a complainant to a complaint under the Sexual Violence Policy. The process of filing my complaint, as well as the circumstances that led me to do so, had a significant impact on both my mental health and my academic performance. Anticipating that the anxiety I was experiencing would affect me during the Winter 2026 semester, I made efforts to communicate my circumstances to my professors and to Sarah Lavigne, a Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Case Manager. Despite these efforts, the emotional impact of the situation and the heightened anxiety I was experiencing became overwhelming and ultimately affected my ability to succeed academically. The complaint's circumstances and the length of time it has taken to decide whether or not the respondent is responsible, have caused me a great deal of anxiety, making it unattainable for me to be on campus out of concern that I might see the respondent; as a result, I was unable to concentrate and finish my coursework. Not only did these circumstances cause me debilitating anxiety, but also increased nightmares of the traumatic event, affecting my ability to sleep and eat properly, which all had major impacts on my inability to complete my final assignments and exams.
Now that I have received the outcome of my complaint and have a clear plan in place for the fall semester, I am in a much stronger position to continue my studies. I am continuing to work with Sarah Lavigne, who has been helping me access mental health supports that I intend to have in place before the school year begins. I have also been working closely with my family doctor to review my medication, and we are currently adjusting the dosage to better manage my anxiety. Approving my petition to withdraw from my Winter semester courses would give me the opportunity for a fresh start and allow me to move forward with the stability and support needed to successfully complete the remainder of my degree.
Kind regards,
Gray MacLachlan
