Petition Letter: Dear Appeals Committee,
I am writing to respectfully request consideration of my petition regarding my final essay grade and final course mark in FILM 112. Specifically, the final course mark does not reflect an additional 1% that was promised in the final tutorial by Edem Abbeyquaye, my TA. I am submitting this petition upon the recommendation of Dan Vena, the Undergraduate Chair in the Department of Film and Media, after my efforts to resolve the matter through the appropriate channels have remained unsuccessful.
For more than 3 months, since the final essay marks were released, I have made consistent and timely attempts to resolve this matter. I have included a timeline below:
• April 28 – I emailed Edem Abbeyquaye, my TA, regarding my final essay grade and the extra 1% promised in the last tutorial.
• April 29 – Edem replied to my email, but did not answer all of my questions. Regarding my final essay grade, she directed me to look at the feedback in OnQ (which I had already seen). She did not address the additional 1%. I replied less than an hour later with follow-up questions. I did not hear back.
• May 10 – I emailed Prof. MacKenzie regarding the final essay and my final course mark, explaining that I had not heard back from Edem despite following up multiple times.
• May 18 – Edem emailed me saying that her contract as the FILM 112 TA had ended, so I should continue trying to get in touch with Prof. MacKenzie. I sent multiple follow-up emails to Prof. MacKenzie.
• June 9 – As per the advice of an academic advisor, I followed up in an email to Prof. MacKenzie and copied Prof. Dan Vena and the Undergraduate Film Office. Prof. MacKenzie replied and said that he would be in touch with Edem and get back to me. Once again, I did not hear back despite following up multiple times.
• July 30 – I went into another academic advising appointment and was advised to email Prof. MacKenzie and Prof. Vena and to copy the Undergraduate Film Office once more. Prof. Vena responded to me within the half-hour and advised me to submit a petition.
While I realize this petition is extremely delayed, this extenuating circumstance has been entirely outside of my control, as I raised the initial concern well within the appropriate timeframe.
This matter is particularly significant to me as the additional 1% would change my course grade from an 89% (A) to a 90% (A+). While the numerical difference is small, the change in letter grade could have a vast impact as I apply to graduate programs, where GPA is an important factor in the admissions process.
I would be very grateful to have this petition reviewed, including both the missing 1% and my request for clarification regarding the grading of my final essay, as both have the potential to affect my final course grade. I appreciate your time and consideration and am happy to provide copies of my email correspondence or any other supporting documentation if needed. However, I am unable to access the course onQ as it ended May 1st.
