Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Hello, I am writing to request permission to late drop COMM 273 from my academic record. Throughout the term, I have made an effort to succeed in this course; however, I had struggled significantly with the material and course expectations in the beginning and I haven't been able to make up for it. As I entered COMM 273 without a prior background in the subject area, I found the course content and assignments more challenging than anticipated. Unfortunately, I performed poorly on two major evaluations in the beginning, and after reviewing my remaining opportunities for assessment, I have determined that I will not be able to recover my grade to a satisfactory level. I acknowledge that I am submitting this request after the official deadline. The delay was not due to a lack of concern for my academic standing as I had improved my performance as the course progressed. Before requesting a late drop, I was communicating with my TA in an attempt to explore possible academic alternatives, including whether additional opportunities for improvement, extra credit work, or adjustments to the weighting of assessments could be considered. I hoped there would be a way to successfully complete the course. After being informed that these options were not available, I realized that a late drop was the most appropriate option to prevent this course from negatively affecting my academic record. I am currently completing my final year of university, and having COMM 273 remain on my transcript would have a significant impact on my overall academic standing. Given my limited remaining time in my degree, I believe that removing this course would allow me to focus on successfully completing my remaining academic requirements while maintaining the strongest possible academic record. I understand the importance of course deadlines and take responsibility for not submitting this request earlier. However, I respectfully ask the committee to consider the circumstances surrounding my decision-making process, including my efforts to seek alternative solutions before pursuing a late drop.
