Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to formally petition for a late drop of HIST125 and ARTH120 for the Summer May-July semester. I am requesting this late withdrawal due to severe extenuating circumstances beyond my control that emerged prior to the June 26, 2026 no academic penalty drop deadline and continued through the July 28, 2026 final drop deadline and directly impaired my ability to complete my coursework and keep up with key academic dates and deadlines.

From the first week of June to the last week of July, my pet became severely ill with chronic flare-ups that required immediate and costly trips to the emergency vet. This exasperated my personal pre-existing QSAS registered disability and also affected my physical health, especially with regards to sleep and energy. I am aware that the drop deadline dates are posted at the beginning of the term, but in the midst of my extenuating circumstance, my decision making was impaired and I believed that I would be able to academically recover once the circumstance subsided. That has proven difficult as I have had to continue both treating his condition and manage compounding impacts from my professional life on top of my academic responsibilities. The drop deadline passed while I was still unable to fully assess my situation.

Upon realizing the severity of my condition, I contacted my instructors to discuss any possible accommodations. While some were able to be made, both courses had progressed to a point where it would prove difficult for me to successfully complete them. I reached out to Academic Advising to ask about the possibility of discussing assignment reweighing, but ultimately decided my best course of action is to submit this appeal after reviewing the options that the advisor provided.

I take my academic responsibilities seriously and am deeply concerned about the impact of this withdrawal on my academic record. However, I believe that my current standing in these courses would result in grades that do not reflect my actual academic ability. Thank you for your time and consideration of my petition.
