Petition Letter: Dear Queen's University, Faculty of Arts & Science
It is with pride that I write to you with intention to return to full-time Art/Sci Studies this fall 2014 (with a minor in Drama). At the end of my 3 year-required withdraw period, I look forward to continuing my academic career at Queen's University armed, now as a 25 year old mature-student, with essential academic skills and a strong precedent for success. Thank-you for your careful consideration and this generous opportunity of reconciliation.
In my absence as a Gael I completed a 2-year Music and Digital Media Diploma at St. Lawrence College, graduating at the top of my class in the academic stream, majoring in three instruments (voice, saxophone, piano) simultaneously through my studies. I will be bringing schooled diligence and newly developed meticulous study habits to my academic practice with my return to Queen's. Having received an entrance scholarship for community involvement in my first year from the Peggy Allan Memorial Fund, I was also awarded with an additional scholarship in my returning year for leadership and academic success from the St. Lawrence College Student Association.
This spring 2014 Queen's University and St. Lawrence College launched a concurrent Music and Digital Media Program. A classical cellist and I made up the selected entertainment program of the agreement signing ceremony between schools, giving a taste of student potential and talent. While being an ambassador for the program I was graduating from, I was honored to provide an example of the institution I was yearning of returning to, Queen's University, by singing for officiates involved in the ceremony.

Weeks later at the Queen's Recognition of Service Dinner this May 2014, I was pleased to commemorate the honorable loyal service of the 25 years worked by the employees recognized at The Ban Righ Centre by providing the evening and dinner entertainment, again through performing music. As Principle Woolf spoke about the importance of loyalty, long-term commitment, and inevitable change as the years pass, I was listening.
I identified strongly with Woolf's words of service and wish to give the same careful attention to my academic obligations and perusals in the future. With the distractions of substances, exploring sexual identity, and fresh independence fulfilling my academic priority was not as concentrated a priority as it is now, and the Principle's motivating speech helped me consciously identify this internal shift of perspective over the past few years.
As the anthem singer for St. Lawrence College (and past anthem singer for Queen's) I look forward to bidding farewell to my college experience while singing the Canadian National Anthem for SLC's June 13th Convocation Ceremony. I will be looking forward past the graduating caps to the near future, returning to Queen's this fall to complete my undergraduate arts degree. I hope to continue my work in the community as an anthem singer, where I regularly represent Kingston, On and the Sir John A Macdonald Bi-Centennial Commission celebrating the life and times of Sir John A Macdonald and the birth of our Great Nation.
Through-out my first years at Queen's University I struggled with identity and addiction issues, and during the year after my first 1 year withdraw, I had both an abortion and miscarriage in a 10 month period. As a Metis-Canadian I took longer than average to become successfully independent after moving out of strict supervision from my Hamilton, On home in first year of University. Now two years sober, organized and dedicated to my work, I now am a summer job counsellor for barriered youth at KEYS Job Centre in downtown Kingston, where I share my story of struggle and experiences with Kingston at-risk youth, giving them job training and development so they too can achieve autonomously. My extenuating circumstances are now points of personal growth, my community experience is essential to my current stability, and it is an honor to share my social and academic mistakes in aid to others at KEYS. My academic potential was always tremendous, however my motivation to complete long-term tasks and ability to deny immediate desires needed some careful developing as I matured.
Working as a professional anthem singer, and being a youth job counsellor at KEYS are not the only things I have been cultivating in my spare time since temporarily leaving the institution. Prior to KEYS, I used all the positive experience and theory training I received in my Drama Department to facilitate a wonderfully profitable and commanding career as a Stage Technician and Stage Manager in Canadian Theatre. My resume is attached for further details on the practical real world opportunities already awarded to me from the great knowledge I acquired (even with inadequate attendance) in my previous terms of study at Queen's. I am excited to move forward in my academic and personal careers and greatly anticipate any opportunity to study again at such an academic leader.
After meeting with various department professors and my department coordinator, I am confident, armed with a long-term academic plan in which will result in graduation eligibility as soon as possible.
Because of the low GPA currently achieved, Fall 2014/Winter 2015 I will be taking classes I have previously attempted and not successfully completed. Once I have completed the appropriate re-takes and my GPA meets requirements, I will then pursue new classes in upper year levels of study.
Lee Atkinson, program coordinator and my current academic advisor is confident in our plan and I know that with her guidance, and my department support, I will be successful in completing my undergraduate degree. I have attached the planning notes from our last meeting choosing to repeat a number of unsuccessful courses and moving forward upon completion with upper year studies.
I am a leader, I am an academic, I am a Gael.
As an ambassador for Queen's and the Kingston community, I would like to come home to study.

Academic Plan: Please see my file in the Art/Sci office submitted on Monday June 9th @ 2:00pm developed with Lee Atkinson, Drama Program Coordinator. I will be re-taking classes I was not successful in completing until my GPA is at a satisfactory level, in which case I will progress to upper year classes to complete my degree requirements.
