Petition Letter: To whomever it may concern,
My name is Tina Cheung and I just completed my first year of undergraduate in the faculty of Arts and Science. I am writing an appeal for my continuation into second year. My current GPA is a 0.667 and I understand that the normal minimum requirement to continue studying is at least a 0.7.
The reason this happened was because coming into this past year, I underestimated my work load and my ability to handle the stress that came along with it. I was not able to manage my time properly, leading to the poor performance I demonstrated. One of the things that surprised me most was that I didn't receive help if I didn't ask for it myself. In high school I had been used to teachers who aided me every step of the way, and even when I faced challenges they would support me thoroughly. However, when I fell behind this year, I thought that I would be able to manage things on my own.
I didn't know how to plan out my schedule and give enough time to just studying and reviewing, or enough time to do assignments that didn't have an impact on my grade but on my overall learning experience. Due to the overwhelming circumstances and changes that I could not keep with, I sometimes felt too stressed to do anything and broke down, and even fell physically ill twice during the year for a week. My friends recommended that I see the counselling services at HCDS after I found out that my GPA by the end of my first year here was below a 0.7. I do not want to continue this trend in my academic career, and so I spoke to Dr. Arunima, and her advice for me was that I should go to see her to help cope with stress with personal issues with family pressure and losing close friends and not making many new ones here, as well as my relatively new relationship. All these events and problems were things I've had trouble dealing with since transitioning to university, but with the proper aid I would be able to handle things much better. I believe that while these problems were more and less unavoidable and had to be dealt with, if they are properly dealt with, my marks will have a strong improvement. So that is my goal in the upcoming year, if I can continue to study at Queen's. Thank you for taking the time to read through my appeal letter.
Regards,
Tina Hiu Yan Cheung

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: To whom it may concern,
I aim to not only better plan out the time that I have to not only study and review materials for class, but also not let myself fall behind by giving myself ample time to rest and stay stress free. I will seek help from Learning Strategies and Counselling when it comes to dealing with assignments, deadlines and stressful situations within the school environment. But going through the past year, now I have a better idea of what is expected at a university level and am very committed to academic success. That way I can be in optimal shape to continue pursuing my Bachelors Degree here at Queen's University. As well I will be having regular meetings with Dr. Arunima from HCDS so that I will not be overwhelmed in coping with stressful situations and be able to focus on school as a priority and similarly make sure I give myself enough time to expand my social circles so I don't feel like I'm not a part of the community. As well I will make sure that if I feel that a 100 course load is too much I'll drop some courses before add/drop deadlines so that way I can concentrate on fewer courses but still do well. As well I am taking time to find exactly what major I want to pursue still, and hopefully by the time this summer has ended I'll have a renewed focus on the upcoming year.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this appeal. I guarantee that I will uphold to the ways that I have detailed in this letter to strive towards the academic goals that I've set. I hope to continue to be able to study here at Queen's University this coming 2014 fall term.
