Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing to drop ITLN P10 for the current semester (Fall 2015). I understand that I am past the deadline for this term however I feel that extenuating circumstances prevented me from dropping this course on time. As a first year student, I am still attempting to assimilate into the culture of Queen¿¿s and deal with my new and changing schedule. Therefore, when the idea of dropping Italian first came into my head, approximately last Monday (Nov. 2nd), I first thought I should not only check with my parents of course, but also my sister who is a third year student here. She went through a similar process in her first year when she dropped two courses. However, what made that interaction difficult is the fact that she is currently on exchange in the Netherlands and there is a surprising amount of difficulty in getting in contact with each other to be able to properly talk about a situation such as this. I needed my sister¿¿s advice because I received my midterm that I had taken the week prior, saw that I did not do well, and needed a second opinion on whether or not I was doing poorly enough to justify dropping a class this late into the year. Having talked to both my parents and my sister by last Thursday, I decided to take a few days to really make up my mind for myself, not realizing that the official deadline was Friday and that it was a non-negotiable time limit. Upon making up my mind Sunday night that I was going to drop this course, I logged onto Solus to do so. When the transaction did not go through on Sunday it did not occur to me that it could be because the deadline had passed. I kept attempting to drop the course over the next few days, obviously to no avail, when it finally occurred to me Tuesday night that the deadline had passed. This is why I have waited till now to contact you as I only went in to see an academic advisor this afternoon (Wednesday Nov. 11th). I understand why, given the fact that I am a few days over the deadline, allowing me to drop this course could be a difficult decision. That being said, remaining in this course is causing me a lot of stress that is taking me away from work I could otherwise be doing for other courses. In the future, if I am allowed to drop this course, I will not only be able to focus more heavily on the other courses I am currently enrolled in, but will be much more mindful of important dates such as deadlines for dropping courses.
