Petition Letter: Dear Sir / Madam,
I am appealing to drop ECON222 (Fall, 2015). Due to circumstances pertaining to my inability to cope with the demands of my courses, my academic performance has reached an all-time low. I attempted to pursue a degree in Applied Economics with a poor mathematical foundation and for purposes pertaining to expectations on my part as opposed to interest. Now, I am facing the reality of pursuing a stream incompatible with where my strengths lie. This course in particular has been difficult as the mathematics involved is more advanced. In attempts to do well in the course, I have fallen behind in my other courses which are now more of a priority as they will act as prerequisites once I change my plan to the Global Development stream (initially my minor). This hardship has left me with dwindling interest and motivation for my studies, as I feel my skills could be better supplied elsewhere.
Continuing with the course will lead to a poor performance despite my attempts at attending tutor sessions and will take away from time and effort that I believe should be targeted towards my other courses. I had continued with the course after the last official date to drop classes given my uncertainty and fear about switching plans. As students, we are constantly faced with the pressures in measuring up to expectations, which comes with the unfortunate reality of not declaring that we are in need of help. I believe this reasoning should not be taken lightly as I have struggled throughout the term in coming to terms with my situation. This decision is not taken lightly, given that my financial situation is not secure. A lighter course load, and the ability to stream my efforts towards courses I gave interest in excelling in, leads to a better outcome for myself, a student with the potential to excel and for the professors, who want students that are keen and willing to go above and beyond.
Should my appeal be granted, I will take the opportunity to focus on my academic performance in my other courses for the remainder of the fall term. Additionally, with the help of an academic advisor, proper changes will be made for my winter term schedule to meet the needs of my changed academic plan. My goal is to succeed academically here at Queen¿¿s and acquire the very best out of my education, and despite my setback, I believe that by being forward looking in my actions I can do this.
