Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate/Assistant Dean of Queen¿¿s University,
I am appealing to drop BIOL 102 and GPHY 104 past the academic deadline.
When I received my offer of admission from Queen¿¿s, no words could describe my excitement for my future. The idea of living four hours away from the town I call home was scary, but I felt that moving as far away as possible would ultimately be a change for the better.
As someone diagnosed with depression and anxiety, as well as a history of eating disorders, I hoped that Queen¿¿s would offer me a new start and help ease my depression. Throughout the last months of high school, my depression had worsened, to the point where I was hospitalized for suicidal thoughts. However, to my disappointment, my mental illness has only worsened in the past 12 weeks. I believe that part of this decline is attributed to being so far from my family and friends. Unfortunately, because of my mental health struggles, I do not adjust as well to change as many others. Thus, beginning a whole new level of education while being four hours away from home has proven to be a bigger challenge than I had imagined. As a result of these struggles, my academic performance has been severely impacted as well. Not to say I will not apply to postsecondary in my future, but at this time, I feel that being surrounded by the support system and familiarity of my home will be beneficial to my mental health. To ease my anxieties about how this semester will affect my future academic endeavours, I feel that it is in my best interest to try to remove BIOL 102 and GPHY 104 from my transcript without academic penalty, so that my struggles during this period of my life do not affect my academic future.
Given my history of hospitalizations, I have come to understand how I cope, and I have found one of the key aspects to my recovery has been being surrounded by the support system I am currently separated from. While I have sought support from both the university and friends in Kingston, I have not been able to find a support system that I can be as comfortable and honest with as the one I have at home. I am hoping that, through this appeal, I can focus on improving my health without the added stress of wondering if my grades during this hard time will follow me for years to come.
Should I be granted the ability to drop BIOL 102 and GPHY 104 past the deadline without academic penalty, I plan to drop the rest of my full year and winter term courses and withdraw for the remainder of the year. I plan to apply to another university close to home to start fresh as soon as I feel mentally well enough.
I appreciate the consideration, and thank you sincerely for your time.
