Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am an Arts and Science student, currently majoring in Economics and I am appealing to withdraw from all of my courses, having missed the academic deadline. I am requesting to withdraw with no academic penalty with regards to my transcript. I am currently enrolled in Econ 212, Econ 222, Econ 239, Econ 250, and Geol 104.

This year has been challenging personally for me on many different levels. On an academic level, I have been struggling with my classes and program as a whole. Despite attending all of my classes for the first few months, I felt as if I was making very little academic progress. It reached a point where I became extremely overwhelmed and dissatisfied with my program. I made efforts to solve this issue by studying with friends and organizing a tutor, but nothing seemed to help. I began to feel worthless in my program and this feeling carried over to life in general. As a result I stopped attending my classes and began to question my own competency and ability to learn. I have become depressed and have lost all motivation to do anything at all. I haven't been able to sleep properly because I am constantly worrying about my future. I went home for a week in November to talk to my parents about my issues. They and I both feel as though it is important for me to take a break from school to take care of myself first and foremost. To complicate matters further, on Sunday, November 29th, my grandmother passed away. I will be going back home to be with my family for a few days and attend the funeral. This year has been emotionally stressful and I see no end in sight. I feel a break from the pressures of academics will help me refocus and improve my physical and emotional well-being.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: With regards to what I will do moving forward in the future, I plan to go home and restore my health. I will likely seek counselling from the specialist that conducted my Psych-Ed assessment during this past summer. When I feel as though I am able to return to Kingston, I will come back and begin looking for a job. I also plan on doing volunteer work in the Kingston area, and may possibly take an online course at Queen's. At this moment in time I am not in a position to make decisions regarding my academic future, however I would like to keep as many options available as I can right now. Thank you for considering my request for late withdrawal without academic penalty.

Sincerely,
James Murray
