Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am writing this letter to appeal the requirement to withdraw for one year.

I am suffering from a mental illness and have been for a number of years. This condition is chronic and has worsened significantly over the past two to three years. Initially, it took some time for me to realize that the reason I was struggling to perform to my full capacity might be related to a mental condition. This is why I only sought medical attention in December 2013. After this consultation with my family physician, it became clear that the nature of my problems were in fact due to a mental illness. I then met with a counselor on campus through Health, Counseling and Disability Services, but did not find it helped to improve my condition. I also lowered my course load to 12 units during the winter semester 2014. Then upon recommendation of my doctor, I began to see a registered psychologist in May 2014 for psychotherapy.

My mental illness severely impacts my ability to perform academically to the best of my ability. It interferes with my energy, and my ability to concentrate and focus. The condition manifests at unusual intervals from day to day and hour to hour, which is why my academic performance has been intermittent over the past three years.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I am an active and involved member of the Queen's community and have a strong desire to return to school in the fall, which is why I am submitting this appeal. I am currently undergoing a twelve-week Cognitive Behavioural Therapy program with my registered psychologist. The psychologist and I are addressing all aspects of my mental health relating to daily life and academics directly. I am also learning different tools I can use to cope that I will utilize next year if I feel I am regressing. My psychologist and I are confident that my mental health will be significantly improved by September and I will be fully prepared to return to school and be successful.

I have a number of plans in place to ensure my success next year and I intend to see them through. I have been engaged in numerous extracurricular activities such as, varsity sports, school clubs, and campus jobs over the past three years. I have decided to cut back significantly on these extracurricular activities. I will continue with only the two most rewarding and important responsibilities. Next, I plan to decrease my course load to 9 units. I plan to meet with a counselor weekly to ensure I stay on track. This time, I will try a number of different counselors until I find the right fit. I will also take some learning strategy workshops (such as, Perfectionism and Writing and Improving your Focus and Concentration) through the Learning Commons early in the semester to supplement any tools my psychologist has given me, and any a Learning Strategies Professional Advisor will give me. I am also planning to retake one of the necessary prerequisite courses to ensure I am confident in the material before moving on to more advanced courses. Finally, I am hoping to join study groups with some peers, which will help specifically due to the nature of my mental illness.
