Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop ECON 255 (Fall, 2015) without academic penalty.

I wish to drop this class because according to the course outline I have not met all the requirements and will thus fail the class automatically. More specifically, students of ECON 255 are expected to complete and hand in 6 of 8 homework assignments. Since I have only completed 5 of 6 mandatory assignments, I will have immediately failed this class. Unfortunately, I have been dealing with some emotional problems and have been seeking counselling to resolve them. The trauma that I have been experiencing has interfered with my ability to focus and caused me to withdraw. Although I have been regularly attending classes, studying and completing assignments has been particularly difficult recently. Since November I have refrained from going outside and interacting with others, apart from attending lectures. Ultimately, I failed to hand in the 6th and last assignment because during the week of its deadline I was experiencing many negative emotions, other deadlines and was unable to concentrate.

For the winter term, I plan to continue counselling in order to relieve some of the anxiety and re-gain my ability to concentrate and be confident. I have discussed a lighter course load with an academic counselor and I wish to commit fully to a treatment that will help me to cope with this disorder. With the lighter course load and counselling I hope that I can improve both my academic and mental well-being.
