Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Benard,
The Request
I am appealing to drop Commerce 211 (Fall 2015) and Economics 255 (Fall 2015).
Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances
During summer 2015 I took two Economics courses, which are ECON 112 and STAT 263. This was because I was planning to switch my major from Classical Studies to Economics and these were the two of the prerequisite courses. I got B on both courses and I was expecting to do much better with upper level econ courses, ECON 212, ECON 222, ECON 255 and COMM 211, in Fall 2015.
It was a few weeks after the midterm exams when I began having serious relationship conflict with my mom. She moved from Korea to Canada in September 2015. Unlike her, I first came to Canada when I was 15 without my parents. From that point I have developed my own ways of taking care of my life and learned how to be mentally and physically independent. However, different from what I view myself my mom thought I still need her attention and wanted to take control over my life; including studying, people I am spending time with, place where I am working at and even things that I do during my spare time. She also had very high academic expectations for me and expected me to get straight As. She began spending time with Koreans who also has their children graduated from Queen's. She always compared me against those kids who are mostly older than I am and already have their careers settled. She forced me to follow their exact path and wanted me to meet them in person. Also, whenever I am going out to meet friends she yelled at me. She thought that I am wasting my time and money meeting my friends when I am supposed to be studying. She often yelled at me forcing me to study, blaming on me for my poor grades. The situation got even worse just before the finals. I couldn't stand anymore. I tried many times telling my mom that I need some break. It didn't work well. She insisted that I have wasted so much time hanging out with friends and boyfriend and that is why I am not getting perfect grades.
When my mom moved to Canada in September she came here with my little brother. He is in grade 6 and I took care of him with his every homework, project and parent-teacher meetings. My mom also wanted me to teach him how to read and write in English whenever I have spare time. She would blame me if he does poor on his school works. She thinks that taking care of my brother is one of my responsibilities and that I should spend at least 2 hours a day. There were no exceptions even during my final exam period.
Furthermore, she often tells me that she wants to go back to Korea so much. She used to be a very talkative and active person. It seemed like she is not adapting well to her new life in Kingston, where not many Koreans who she can spend time with are living in. She often spent a night telling me how much she misses the way her life used to be in Korea.
As our relationship conflict becomes more intensive, I was so much stressed and was far behind of every courses. It seemed impossible to catch up all the materials until the final exams. So I went up to my boyfriend and told him the situation I was going through and that I need his help. He is in 4th year Economics and I asked for help on ECON 255 and COMM 211. He rejected telling me that he also has a lot of works to do and doesn't want me to rely on him anymore. He also told me that he needs some time to think about our relationship and wants to break up with me.
Future plan
It was so much helpful talking with my counselor, Whitney. She understands why I am having such trouble with my mom. She explained and let me realize that my mom and I have different perspectives since I moved to Canada earlier in my life. Also, she suggested me to visit Learning Strategies so that I learn how to organize my time well when studying. Learning how to manage my own time will also allow me to show my mom that I am doing things that I am supposed to do. Moreover, I am retaking ECON 255 and ECON 212 in this semester; the former I failed, the latter I got D. I am planning to retake another failed course, COMM 211 in next semester.
Thank you so much for sparing your time reading my letter Dr. Benard.
Sincerely,
Healee Yu (student : 10108929)
