Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom it may concern

My Name is Alex Coburn (10187640) I am a first year Queen¿¿s student from Toronto and I have found myself in a slight predicament. It was my hope as of January 9th to enrol and find success in Dr Margaret Maliszewska¿¿s introduction to German (GRMN 101) course. Before I continue to explain the situation I must provide some context to my current circumstances.

On December 24th of 2015 my family and I were vacationing in Canc¿n Mexico. Whilst swimming in strong tide and waves I was playing on some sand barriers/reefs in the ocean. I jumped off a sand barrier but because of the strong tide a shallow mound had been formed and not seeing what I was jumping into I was unable to brace for the impending surface. I broke my leg on impact and was required to get surgery that night in a Mexican hospital. The break itself was not that bad but the force of my fall had badly torn two tendons in my ankle, those tendons were why I needed surgery. I hope your Christmas was better than mine as I awoke in a hospital bed on the 25th of December hours after my surgery.

As you might be able to imagine readjusting to Queen¿¿s life with a broken leg in the winter term has not been an easy task. In addition to this on the 11th of January I was diagnosed with Step-throat and spent the next few days bed bound with a horrid fever and headache. Needless to say the past few weeks have not been as smooth and seamless as one might have hoped.

Now I must explain why I am writing you this appeal. On the 9th of January I put GRMN 101 in my ¿¿Solus Shopping Cart¿ but was unable to fully enrol in the course because I required the permission of the instructor. After calling and discussing with a representative of the Arts and Science Department I was told that I needed to go to the lecture on Wednesday the 13th, speak with professor Maliszewska and then enrol in the course. After attending the lecture on the 13th, having a great time and really finding an appreciation for the potential of learning the German language I spoke with the professor. I was informed by Dr Maliszewska that I should think things over, be sure of what I was committing to and then send her a final confirmation email. Now in this discussion Dr Maliszewska said that I should get back to her before the 15th of January. Unfortunately, the next day I had a hospital appointment at the Kingston Hotel Dieu Hospital in regards to the recovery status of my leg. As well, I was still recovering from my strep-throat illness from only a few days prior. The reason I mention this is that with all my personal health troubles it simply slipped my mind to get back to Professor Maliszewska before the 15th and instead I sent her an email on the night of the 18th, three days past the course enrolment deadline.

As you can see the reason I am in this predicament is because of my own misunderstanding. However, I ask that you still allow me to enrol in GRMN 101 because I have been to the second of the two lectures, I have been and am prepared to put in the work to study this language, and am only in this situation because I was unable to enrol properly in the first place on the 9th of January.

So in all I ask that you find sympathy in my recent misfortune and allow me to further my education as a Queen¿¿s Arts and Science student.

Yours truly and with much regard
-Alex Coburn

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My Academic plan to be successful in GRMN 101 is to continue with my studying and practicing of the language. I have only missed one lecture of the course and have all ready covered that lost materiel. I will continue to put forth a strong effort and maintain good study habits. Dr Margaret Maliszewska told our class that the best way to do well in GRMN 101 is to practice 50 minutes a day. I currently use the professor's suggestion and I believe if I continue to do so I will find academic success.
