Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
My name is Alejandra Kudo and I am appealing to drop CISC 101 (Summer, 2015), CISC 102(Fall, 2015), and ECON 212(Fall, 2015).
I was diagnosed with clinical depression in June, after showing severe symptoms throughout my first year at Queen¿¿s. This psychological challenge and extenuating circumstance was beyond my control. My diagnosis came around the time I took CISC 101 in the summer, and resulted in me not being able to go to the final exam. Last semester, I failed two courses, CISC 102 and ECON 212. After being diagnosed it became a constant struggle to manage my emotional well-being and my physical health, in addition to my academics. These extenuating circumstances interfered with my time and energy to study, and did not allow me to properly prioritize my academics, thus, affecting my academic performance. Also, during this time, it came to my realization that my major did not align with my interests and strengths.
I have sought professional help, by consulting with a personal counsellor and family doctor, who are monitoring my dosage medication. I have been doing two types of therapy, ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). My counsellor from back home (Oakville) does ACT therapy with me, and my counsellor in Kingston; off-campus (Brad McNeil) has been doing CBT therapy with me on a weekly basis. In addition, to seeking professional help, I have taken adequate measures to help my emotional well being and physical health, by practicing Yoga, and going to the gym. These steps I have taken to deal with my extenuating circumstances after my diagnosis, have helped my emotional well-being and overall health.
My plan for the future is simple. I will continue to follow these steps to taking better care of my mental health, switching into my desired major that aligns with my interests and strengths, and retaking CISC 102 this semester. Computing is my desired program I would like to switch into. I am taking the necessary courses to switch into this program, by retaking CISC 102 and taking CISC 121 this semester.
Thank you for your consideration.
