Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
During the Fall semester I had elevated amounts of anxiety that affected my studying abilities which carried over to my exams in Microeconomics (ECON 310). I was not myself, I could not register information normally and I was unable to think properly. I sought help from external sources that allowed me to calm my self at times. My friends and family (many of them professionals in the subject) tried to offer me suggestions in order to change my mindset during this time, but with no success. The difficult information in the course set panic in my mind and I felt somewhat hopeless leading up to a 30 midterm. On the morning of the exam, I had a panic attack and I was unable to study or recall anything that I had attempted to learn. During the exam ( worth 50) I panicked and wrote down information and equations that did not apply to the actual course. As a result, I received a terrible grade on the midterm. This anxiety carried over to my final and a similar situation happened. I left questions that required mathematics with only words and due to this I barely passed. I received a D+ in the course, but I do not think that this is reflective of my true abilities. My elevated levels of anxiety rendered me incapable of preforming well in this course even when applying myself the best way I know how. I saw my family doctor and she suggested that I see someone in order to ensure that this does not happen again.
I was unable to submit an appeal by the deadline given that my medical doctor resides in Ottawa and does not work on weekends. I have classes until late afternoon on Fridays so I had to travel to Ottawa in order to get a medical note to explain my circumstance. My doctor sees only emergency cases on Fridays, but she made a exception in my case in late January.
