Petition Letter: I have decided that I would like to appeal to take my third year of undergraduate study at another institution. The Trent-In-Ghana program through Trent University will provide me with a full years worth of academic learning in the country of Ghana in West Africa. The course that I take will be through Trent, and will count as Trent credits, but will be taught by academic professionals living and teaching in Ghana.
The Trent-in-Ghana (TIG) Program combines in-class instruction offered by Ghanaian academics and professionals in Term 1 with experiential learning from a 12 week placement with a development organization in Term 2. Students spend a full academic year in Ghana, from September until the end of April, participate in several field trips, and work for twelve weeks with a development organization. Ghanaian academics and development professionals will provide the instruction.
I stumbled upon the Trent-in Ghana program completely by accident. After searching extensively for a study abroad opportunity that appealed to me, I came upon TIG, and instantly new it was the perfect fit. My reasons for applying to the program are very simple. I love what I am learning at Queen¿¿s, but am itching to see it with my own eyes. The Trent-in-Ghana program offers the experience of living and learning in a developing country, but also allows me to experience working for an NGO, which is what I aspire to do as a career. I personally believe that this program is perfect for giving me greater insight into third world development and will introduce me to the workings of Non-Governmental Organizations.
Ultimately, I believe that taking my third year of academic studies at the TIG program will give me a better insightful experience into the field of development work. The experience and knowledge that I obtain abroad will be beneficial and helpful in continuing my fourth year of study at Queen's university.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: As far as academics go, the TIG program will provide me with 30.0 transferable credits that I can use towards my BAH degree in Global Development Studies.
Looking at my degree requirements, I will need to take DEVS 300 (Cross-Cultural Research Methods) and DEVS 340 (Theories of Development) as well as two 3.0 seminar credits in my final year of studies at Queen's. Additionally, I will need to take my 6.0 credit language requirement in my final year as well. This is all do-able, and after meeting with my department head (Professor Paritosh Kumar), I will be able to fulfill all degree requirement in my final year os studies without issue.

IDST/ANTH 3770 ¿¿ Society, Culture & Development in Africa (6.0 Credits)
This course examines the major historical dimensions and socio-cultural diversities in sub-Saharan Africa, the changing economic relationship of the area to the global economy, and recent trends toward democratization and the strengthening of civil society (term 1).
IDST 3780 ¿¿ Ghana Seminar (6.0 Credits)
This course examines contemporary Ghana in the light of its historical background and its patterns of stratification, religion, ethnicity and gender. Attention is given to the processes of structural transformation, including economic policy, social and political change (term 1).
IDST 3790 ¿¿ Local Dynamics of Change (6.0 Credits)
This course examines the impact of national development processes at the local level and ways of enhancing citizens¿¿ capacities to claim their rights. In addition, it exposes students to applied research methods at the community level (term 1).
IDST 3800 ¿¿ Community Development (12.0 Credits)
This course addresses the theory and practice of community development, followed by an extensive (twelve week) field placement (term 2).
After taking all of these courses through TIG, I will be able to apply them to my degree at Queen's University, and will consequently obtain a full year of academic study through Trent.
