Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this appeal to drop PHIL 203 after the academic deadline and have that removed from my transcript. I would like to drop this course as I believe that external circumstances have affected my performance in this course.

At the end of the fall term of 2015 I experienced a death in my family, the circumstances around the death were extremely difficult and I came into this semester very low and depressed. I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression and was placed on medication to help last October. I am being treated through La Salle and have been seeing Dr. Borins since October of 2015. In the middle of January I experienced another death in the family, with my grandmother passing away. I had barely recovered from the other death when this one happened and it became another difficult time. I did not get to go to Ireland for the funeral as I was not sure I could mentally handle it and instead had to deal with the grief on my own away from my family. This semester has not been easy since these two deaths, and I have been struggling emotionally. My anxiety and depression have been hard to deal with but I have been working with counsellors at La Salle as well as seeing a psychotherapist to receive assistance.

I have been registered in four courses this semester as I wanted to get closer to completing my undergrad. My other three courses: DEVS 221, ENSC 320 and ENSC 390, have been going well and I am happy with them. However, I have really struggled in my fourth course PHIL 203 and do not feel that I have been able to perform in that course to the best of my abilities. As can be seen on my transcript my grades have continued to improve as the years have gone on. I believe this is because I have learnt how to study. This year I have been extremely communicative with my professors and teaching assistants, meeting with them when I am concerned or need help. I think this has helped and I would do that when I retake PHIL. As I am almost done my degree, and after meeting with an academic advisor, I will be taking a few courses online next semester (including PHIL 203) so that I can finish and complete my degree. I would appreciate the opportunity to have it dropped and then I can re-take it next semester when I am in a better place mentally. I know that this is a difficult situation but this has been an extremely hard year for me, with the deaths in my family and mentally, and I would like to be able to work to achieve my goals.

Thank you for your consideration,

Rachel Lynn
