Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to appeal the dropping of Classic 201 Winter Semester after the deadline. There have been several factors that contributed to this request, and my professor recommended that I should appeal due to extenuating circumstances.
I am diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, and this semester proved to be very difficult for my mental health. I missed my first midterm due to a depressive episode. The second midterm I also missed, this one due to my grandpa's funeral. The funeral was in Sudbury Ontario on March 12 at 9:00 am, and the midterm was on March 11. I had to drive to Sudbury to prepare for and attend the funeral, and was unable to attend class.
As a result, it has become impossible for me to pass this course. I acknowledge that there were steps that I should have taken before this point to potentially salvage the course, however I did not take the necessary actions largely due to my depression. After my Grandpa's death, I became more severely depressed and ended up neglecting this course. The other courses in my schedule were graded on attendance and participation, so I prioritized those. This resulted in my current predicament.
Dr. Kelly Mannen from LaSalle Mental Health is the counselor that I see regarding my mental health, and as such she has agreed to submit a letter of validation. This is the link for the obituary validating my grandpa's funeral and its date: http://yourlifemoments.ca/sitepages/obituary.aspoid939581 , and the letter is attached in this appeal.
In my future studies, I intend to strive to excel in my courses, and to take the required steps if I am unable to do so as soon as possible. I intend to meet regularly with a mental health professional, and discuss a more effective treatment plan. If the course is not able to be dropped, to make up for this semester I would retake the course in order to maintain my average. To succeed in the course, I would either join a study group for the course or hire a tutor.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. Please contact me by e-mail or phone if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Karen Kehoe
