Petition Letter: Thursday April 28th, 2016

To The Associate Dean (Studies),

I am a first year student in the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (Honours) program. I am appealing to drop the pass/fail PACT P01 (Winter 2016) course. This course is a one-day swim test.

I was unable to partake in the course due to extenuating circumstances of a surgery. I had my wisdom teeth removed January 21st and the recovery took longer than anticipated due to unforeseen complications. I consulted my oral surgeon once the pain had been going on for more than one week, and he advised me not to take part in physical activity until the swelling and pain ceased. I called one of the nurses every other week until the pain subsided. As a result of this, I was unable to take part in any type of physical activity, including swimming, for several weeks.

I had full intentions of taking the swim test when I registered for the course at the beginning of the semester. It was not until after the surgery and the recovery of my wisdom teeth took much longer than expected that I realized physically, I would be unable to take the swimming test. By the time I realized I would be unable to take the swim test it was too late to drop a course.

I did not attend or take the swim test at all. Since I was unable to drop the course because I thought I would be taking it, I received a fail in the course. I consulted Anna van der Meulen, Undergraduate Studies and Finance Coordinator in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, about my extenuating circumstances and the mark that I would be receiving.

This adjustment will help me succeed in my future studies as I hope to gain acceptance into the accelerated nursing program. In the future, if this happens again I will make an effort to go home to Guelph and see my doctor/surgeon rather than just communicating over the phone.
