Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to appeal my one-year academic suspension from Queens University's Faculty of Arts and Science due to my failure in meeting the minimum required academic grade. Although I was disappointed to learn the news, I understand the regulation and take full responsibility for my poor academic performance. However, I am hoping to use this letter to explain my cause and ask you to please consider reinstating me in the fall.
It has always been my dream to study abroad after high school and I was ecstatic when I learned that I got accepted to Queens University two years ago. However, the transition to live in a foreign country by myself and study at a school with a different academic system has proven to be more overwhelming than I originally envisioned. I spent most of my school years in Hong Kong learning through assignments, papers, class participation without any exams. Although I started learning about exam-taking late in my high school years, it's taking me more time to get accustomed to this culture as most other students had many more years to practice handling the stress, managing time, and effective study technique. Hence I tend to do better with papers and open book exam, as evidenced by my B+ grade in the Human Geography course which is heavily assignment based, and the 19/20 score in my Micro Economic class open book exam. However, I am trying very hard to get up to speed with the exam culture.
Also, understanding University is a place for us to explore new potential paths I took computer science as an elective during the first semester of my first year. Even though it was very challenging, I persisted, unfortunately the countless hours of study still led to a failing grade. However, I do not regret taking the class as it gave me an opportunity to learn that computer science is not my strength.
To further support my academic determination, both Professor Charles Molson (stats 263) and Professor Anne M. C. Godlewska (Gphy 101) have agreed to vouch for my improvement in my studies and can be contacted as part of the appeal review process.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Going forward, I plan to further leverage the resources that are provided by the university, i.e., the learning strategy center, writing center to enhance my academic capability. I am also thinking of attending summer courses or other similar training to improve my focus and concentration skills.
Please understand that my low GPA that led to my suspension does not indicate that I am a bad student, but really a good, hard-working student who is struggling with the transition from Hong Kong to Canada and the new exam culture. I hope you will give me an opportunity to demonstrate my full potential. Thank you for considering this appeal.
