Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean:

I am appealing to drop HIST 250 (FW, 2015-2016) and HIST 255 (F, 2015).

I began experiencing the onset of a mental illness early in the fall semester that brought along secondary symptoms of anxiety in social settings that made it extremely difficult for me to attend classes, be in the presence of others, and complete the necessary coursework in order to succeed. I was particularly unable to perform well in the classes in which attendance of lectures were necessary to complete the coursework, and they were specifically the HIST 250 and HIST 255 courses. I was affected by this mental illness throughout the entire school year. Passing these two courses without attending the lectures was unfeasible. The courses I was able to pass were not lecture-intensive and could be completed with the aid of the requisite textbooks. I struggled mightily in the second semester when my symptoms intensified, which is why I currently have two incomplete grades for two others courses, but was fortunate enough to have an extension on coursework into the summer. My professor for the HIST 250 (FW) course was informed of my condition and was willing to offer the same extension on her coursework, but we came to the conclusion that that was not feasible considering I was without the lecture notes. And since a great portion of the marks distributed came from presentations throughout her fall-winter course, which I could not appear for, those marks were irredeemable.

When I met with a medical practitioner concerning my mental illness at my worst I was provided with the proper medication in order to contain the symptoms of my mental illness. I was also advised to consult with counsellors regularly to ensure I am on the right path to recovery. I have been doing both of these things. However, I was only able to see the positive effects of the medication and counselling after 4 weeks of being diagnosed and medicated. I was assured by the medical practitioner that the medication would allow me to perform normally if I consistently take it. So far it has been working. I am currently completing the coursework of two other courses in which I can salvage marks in because they don¿¿t require lecture notes.

In order to ensure I do not allow my mental illness to last as long as it has or, at best, recur again, I plan on taking preventative measures advised to me by my personal counsellor. By taking my prescription medicine consistently, meeting with my personal counsellor, along with the purchase of a light therapy device would serve as the best chances of inhibiting the medical illness from occurring again. I was largely unfamiliar with what was happening to me when I was affected by the illness. Now that I am more informed, I am more equipped to prevent such things from affecting my schoolwork in the future by taking the necessary steps as advised by my counsellor.

Best,
Jerry Zheng
