Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am appealing to waive the 21-day deadline to submit an academic appeal for ECON 243 (Winter 2015).

I was unable appeal to extend my incomplete grade for ECON 243 from the time the regular appeal deadline lapsed up to the current time due to difficulty surrounding my recovery from my sexual assault. Having been sexually assaulted by a member of the Queen's community, it has been difficult for me in this past year to adjust back to life at Queen's and to be reminded of the impact this event has had on me and my studies. When scheduling my deferred exam with my professor, I was not informed by Queen's that the incomplete grade only allowed for one term to complete my coursework. Wanting to take my exam the next term my professor was teaching the course, I obtained permission from my professor and took my exam during the regular exam period of Winter 2016. The professor had not indicated that there would be any problems with that timeline.

I have spoken to many people about this matter during the past few weeks, both in the economics department and within academic advising and the faculty of arts and science. I was given the impression that there was nothing for me to be concerned about so I was surprised to receive the email from Katie Phillips. I thought that this matter was behind me and taken care of and recently it has been difficult for me to once again be reminded of this difficult time in my life.

I have completed my course work for ECON 243 and have moved home to Dallas, Texas to be with my family. I am fulfilling my remaining requirements to graduate through Arts and Science Online Continuing and Distance studies so that I may complete my degree away from Queen's University's campus. I am therefore requesting at this point as well that you extend the incomplete in this course, allowing me to accept the change of grade that was submitted by my instructor.
