Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

My name is Graham Kennedy and I am appealing to add a Musc 171 online course past the application date. I am applying for this because I have been accepted into a graduate program starting in September and I am three units short of graduating. I was unaware that I was short the total units needed to graduate with a BMus and therefore have all the other more specialized requirements completed. By the time I found out that I was short three units the summer application deadline had already passed. I have been in contact with Dr. Lind who is the Chair of Undergraduate Studies for Music and by extension the assistant Dean and they have given me their support in this matter. An email showing their support is included below.

I have already contacted Professor MacKay, who is teaching MUSC 171,outlining the situation

I understand that the summer term has already begun and I am willing to work hard to catch up on what I have missed so far.

Thank you for your time

Graham Kennedy

Hi Graham,

Here is the reply from the Assistant Dean:

Yes we can accommodate for this and allow him to add a course late. He will need to appeal unfortunately but the circumstances you indicate will be sufficient, especially with your support.

Directed studies is a possibility, but he can also write directly to the instructor of any of the May-July courses to seek permission to add late and we would allow that as well. Often when it is the student¿¿s final course to graduate and he/she is focused on catching up the instructor will be accommodating.

Let me know TODAY which option you would like to take and we¿¿ll get it set up (I¿¿m on vacation as of next week and not checking my e-mail ¿¿ if we do the directed study in particular, we still need to timetable the course since it¿¿s not currently on the books). If you do a directed study, I will be your supervisor. If you want to take MUSC 171, write to Robb MacKay (Robbie.mackay@queensu.ca) and see whether he is willing to late-add you to his course, and what work you need to catch up on at this point. MUSC 171 would be complete by the end of June, so this might be your better option to prove to Ottawa that you¿¿ve completed your program before September.

Here¿¿s a link to the appeals form (bottom of the page): http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals. Include this e-mail in your appeals paperwork to show that you have the support of me as Chair of Undergraduate Studies for your program to late-add a course for summer term.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Over this summer I have a full time job. However when I am not working which is about 8 hours a day, I have regular access to the internet and a quiet space to study. I believe that I can excel in this course even though I have missed the first week.
