Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing this appeal in order to have one a course I took over the winter term, Math 281, dropped. I am hoping to use this appeal process in order to remove a grade from my transcript that I do not feel represents me as a student or my understanding of the material in this course. Prior to the final exam I had a mark that was about average for this course but for me was lower than my average grade causing me a bit of stress however this is what I expected due to the difficulty of the course. A few years ago I started to struggle with abdominal pains, and was diagnosed with IBS, after going to a few professionals for advice on how to deal with it not much was helpful so I just managed it on my own trying to stay away form foods that I thought were causing me problems and still going to the bathroom very frequently. I had noticed that during stressful times, like exam periods that the episodes would flare up and intensify. However I would manage this by not eating prior to exams or having coffee, and making sure I got up early enough to properly prepare. This exam was different from most of my others as the weight of the exam could potentially be 100 of my mark if I got under 40, and a significant proportion of my mark if I got between 40 and 50. This only made me more stressed because of the difficulty of the course although before the exam I was around the class average. A few days before the exam I was having acute abdominal pain and going to the bathroom 4-6 times a day and affected my ability to prepare and the day of the exam the pain continued and had diarrhea making it difficult to write the exam. I tried to power through as I usually have pain similar to this and thought it would go away as it has in the past but this was not the case and I failed despite feeling confident and comfortable with the content of the course. In the future in order to put myself in a position to succeed I believe I should ask for extra time so I know that going to the bathroom during the exam will not impact my ability to write and I am working with my doctor to try and find the triggers and looking for ways to prevent it from flaring up and affecting my work. I ask that can understand and sympathize for my situation and hopefully can assist me in reaching my goal. As I do not believe this grade is a proper representation of me as a student and it can have serious implication on my future. Sincerely,
