Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to appeal my one-year academic suspension from Queens University's Faculty of Arts and Science due to my failure in meeting the minimum required academic grade. Although I was disappointed to learn the news, I understand the regulation and take full responsibility for my poor academic performance. However, I am hoping to use this letter to explain my cause and ask you to please consider reinstating me in the fall.
It has always been my dream to study abroad after high school and I was ecstatic when I learned that I got accepted to Queens University two years ago. However, the transition to live in a foreign country by myself and going to University has proven to be more overwhelming than I originally envisioned. I used to be a very outgoing person surrounded by friends, but may be due to the cultural differences, I had a very hard time connecting with fellow students in my residence. In addition, trying to adjust to a different academic system has definitely taken a toll on me. I spent most of my school years in Hong Kong learning through assignments, papers, class participation without much exams, while most other students had many more years to practice handling the stress, managing time, and effective study technique. Hence I tend to do better with papers and open book exam, as evidenced by my B+ grade in the Human Geography course which is heavily assignment-based, and the 19/20 score in my Micro Economic class open book exam. Failing computer science during my first semester of my first year also didn't help with my confidence. I took the course as an elective as I believe University is a place for us to explore new potential paths. Even though it was very challenging, I persisted, unfortunately the countless hours of study still led to a failing grade.
Feeling isolated, anxious about exams and with a low self-esteem, I tried exercising to help relieve the stress, but probably had been doing it excessively which in turn made me exhausted and lost focus in class. Finally realizing my inability to handle the situation alone, I started seeing the campus counselor earlier this year and was given various methods to cope with stress. I definitely felt an improvement after a few sessions, resulting in better grades this semester than my previous semester.
To further support my academic determination, both Professor Charles Molson (stats 263) and Professor Anne M. C. Godlewska (Gphy 101) have agreed to vouch for my improvement in my studies and can be contacted as part of the appeal review process.
