Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to take Bio205 Mendelian and Molecular Genetics this coming Fall 2016 without retaking Bio103 for the third time to attain the required grade. I'm a second year student taking Biomedical Computing. I did Bio102 in Fall, and Bio103 in Winter last year and scored C and D respectively. Since I fell short of the minimum requirement to take Bio 205, I retook Bio 103 Winter this year and scored a D+. The second performance still did not meet the prerequisite to proceed with the next course. Therefore, I ask for your permission to have the scores commuted to CR (credit) standing to make them GPA neutral. I am an international student on an external government scholarship with strict conditions, which cannot be extended. For example, I am not allowed to take more online courses through my studies, and one of the conditions is that I have to be enrolled only in Biomedical Computing. Therefore if I repeat a year, I will have difficulty finishing my degree in time as I rely on this funding.
There were a number of extenuating circumstances that led to the dismal performance in the course. To begin, my uncle passed away when we were getting ready to begin the final examinations. The shock of my uncles death had such far-reaching effects on me that by the time of the exam, I had not been able to come into terms with the loss. Prior to the death of my uncle, I had been having family issues that had made it necessary that I see a counselor on several occasions that I had to even defer quizzes in some courses I was taking then.
Therefore, the low grades in the exams do not fairly reflect my ability and understanding of the courses owing to my mental and physical health at the time of the examinations. The bereavement significantly hampered my ability to concentrate and focus clearly during exam preparation and sitting. My family issue has been a long-term problem that has cost me a lot time and drained me emotionally as well as mentally.
Your permission to take Bio 205 will enable me continue to befit for my scholarship. I would like to assure you that I have grasped the fundamental concepts in the courses and I have the potential to excel in Bio 205. I will be continuing counselling and am going to try my best to not let my performance down further hopefully. I will be looking into going beyond counselling if need be and perhaps be starting medication if things don't work out. However, as of right now, my priority is to complete my degree with good academic standing and complete my courses required. Hence your assistance today regarding this matter will be the foundation for my future and I hope that whatever decision you make will be beneficial for myself indeed. I thank you for your time.
