Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,

My name is Janine Fung (0623-8991) and I am appealing to Return to My Studies after the requirement to withdraw for three years has lapsed. The Board of Studies denied my initial appeal for the request to withdraw acknowledging that while my medical condition did cause extenuating circumstances beyond my control, I failed to create a concrete academic plan. My request to return to my studies as a full-time student can be supported by my ability to handle a large workload, improved psychological wellness, and a strong, realistic academic plan.

The past three years have been used effectively by giving me the time required to improve my mental well-being that will allow me to handle the workload required to academically succeed. I was diagnosed and have undergone treatment for my anxiety and Attention Deficit Disorder for almost four years, which has improved my ability to handle high stress situations I was previously unable to. The combination of meditation therapy and adjustment to my current medication for over a year has helped me overcome my mental inability to academically apply myself supported by the attached letter from my physician.

My improved psychological well-being is reflected in my ability to balance courses I have undertaken in the interim at Ryerson University since last summer with a part-time job for 2 years as a Medical Assistant. My employment at 303 Paediatrics for the William Osler Health centre allowed me to develop a productive routine as I was working towards my mental recovery. To prepare myself for the completion of my degree, I started enrolling in courses last May to maintain a working knowledge of relevant courses and prove that I can excel academically in classes related to my program, which was a previous concern. I have attached my transcript to reveal my academic progress and capacity to undertake a workload required of a full time student provided a reasonable academic plan.

I have worked very hard to improve my mental health and have demonstrated academic competence during my time of withdrawal with the hopes of returning to Queen¿¿s to complete my degree. The challenging steps I have taken on a psychological and academic level have prepared me to undertake the following proposed academic plan that is realistically achievable with my current set of skills.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. It is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Janine Fung

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: To optimize my chances of academic success, my aim is to rehabilitate my transcript and complete my degree as a full-time student. The proposed academic plan is to retake courses I previously did poorly in, enrol in less advanced courses to demonstrate the ability to acquire new information, enrol in the two remaining mandatory courses required of my degree, and seek credit standing for courses taken previously.
The reason for choosing a full-time over part-time status is because taking a maximum of three courses per team would decrease the odds of a GPA increase sufficient enough to be released from academic probation, especially if the courses I seek for credit standing are not granted. More importantly, I have demonstrated the ability to handle a three course load while being employed part-time proven by my term GPA of 3.59 in Winter 2016 at Ryerson University.
My ideal timetable would include the following for the Fall Term PHYS107A, CHEM281, ANAT309 and BCHM218. This four course balance of retaking old courses with a new 200 level course required for my degree will allow me to increase my GPA, demonstrate knowledge acquisition with BCHHM218, a course that research programs of interest for my future goals require, and gage my ability to undertake a course load of that magnitude to optimize my academic progress in the following term. The Winter Term would ideally include: PHYS107B, CHEM282, PHAR230, BCHM316, and potentially BIOL330. PHAR230 is one of the mandatory courses required of my degree and the rest of the courses I have taken previously. Depending on my results from the fall term, I will attempt to pursue BIOL330 since it is a course of interest. Furthermore, I will appeal for a credit standing for the following courses taken in my first and second year: MUSC171, MATH122, ECON112, and CHEM285 when my psychological issues were impeding my academic performance beyond my control to increase my GPA to optimize my pursuit of future aspirations.
Lastly, my anxiety uncontrollably inhibited me from seeking help from professors and TAs previously. At Ryerson, I have managed to reach out to all of my professors and Lab Instructors, which has helped my confidence tremendously. My increased control over my anxiety will allow me to seek continual support to guarantee academic progress towards complete my degree.
