Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean(Studies):
I am writing to appeal the Faculty's decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s University for one year. I was not surprised, but very upset to receive a letter earlier this week informing me of my dismissal. I would like to urge you to reinstate me for the upcoming semester.
I admit, I had a very difficult time adjusting this first year in university, and my grades suffered as a result. I don¿¿t mean to make excuses for my poor academic performance, but I would like to explain the circumstances. Before registering for 33 credits for the first year, I already knew it would require a lot of self-discipline and focus. I thought I could handle the work load that came with it, and I still believe I could have, due to extenuating circumstances, beyond my control, I developed depression the fall when I first started school at Queen's. I was clinically diagnosed with depression that has been determined to have started since I first started university. Even when I was in lectures or tutorials, I was not at my best and unable to focus on my schoolwork, and I know I have the ability to do better than what is shown on my transcript right now. Please take into account what I achieved in high school compared to my current standing, I know I can do better. I understand now that I should have sought help earlier or taken a leave of absence to focus on getting better. I thought I could brave it and handle everything at the same time, and I tried my best, but I was wrong.
I love Queen¿¿s University, and it would mean the world to me to graduate with a degree from this school. If I am reinstated, I will focus much better on my schoolwork, take fewer credits, and manage my time more wisely, as well as retaking courses and additionally reconsider if the major I originally wanted to pursue is what¿¿s right for me. After I came home for the summer, I have gone to seek help from a psychiatrist and have already been feeling better with antidepressants and visits to the doctor to monitor my mental state. I have also been in touch with an academic advisor regarding the next steps i should take to work out the best options in regards to my current situation.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Upon being reinstated, I plan on registering in some first year science courses along with taking some arts courses. Instead of focusing solely on just one area of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, I hope to take advantage of this opportunity to be able to take courses not only in the science area, but also in the arts, as I am also interested in taking courses like political studies or English.
I would continue to be a full time student except I would start off with just taking 30 credits a year (the normal course load) and if possible, slowly increase the credits taken per year if needed. I have also considered spreading the amount of time of taking a normal course load, like taking a lighter load during the normal school semesters and taking the rest of the credits needed during the summer. Of course, I will be talking to an academic advisor regarding what kind of action I should take that would be best suited for me.
As the major cause of my current academic standing stemmed from depression that developed in the beginning of the school year, I would continue to seek counselling along with what my doctor thinks is best. With that, I will also be making some adjustments to how I study the content presented in lectures and make improvements for having better time management.
