Petition Letter: 30 Jun 2016
To whom it may concern,
I am appealing to wave the twenty-one day deadline due to extenuating circumstances. The deadline was set for me to appeal to a ¿Return to Academics After Three Years¿¿. The following letter will describe in detail why I was unable to make this deadline.
First, I recently was prescribed a new medication to treat my recent diagnosis of ADHD. This medication did not have the desired affect of making me focus and I reacted poorly, making me lose track of several important dates. I have since had this corrected.
Secondly, during the period in which the twenty-one days fell, my girlfriend was undergoing treatment for a tumour found during a routine medical procedure. It was not known at the time if the tumour was malignant and as such was a pressing issue in which she required my emotional and mental support. Furthermore, she has also been previously diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (which she has been receiving treatment for). This made my support much more urgent. Of course, news of alignment also weighed heavily on me, and prevented me from prioritizing other personal requirements.
Lastly, in early May, I received the unfortunate news that a friend I had made in the military (also a student at RMC) had very unexpectedly committed suicide. This devastating news ¿¿ combined with my failed treatments and girlfriends illness ¿¿ became overwhelming. As the beginning of June approached, the wellness of my girlfriend was still unknown, my friend¿¿s suicide was severely affecting me, and my treatments were only starting to be corrected. It is at this time that I would like to refer to my student file, which has documented another recent diagnosis of major depression from early April; thus the circumstances that I was experiencing were greatly intensified.
I would also like to add the minor issue of my work commitments. As mentioned earlier, I¿¿m an infantry officer in the military. I require this work as I am financially responsible for myself. Due to a prior contract, I was doing fieldwork during the last week of the appeal. I understand that work commitments should not be prioritized over academics, but I was in a place without Internet access managing over 50 soldiers and working approximately 20 hours per day. However, now that my treatments have been corrected, I intend to return to Queen¿¿s, putting my academics as my only priority. When this first appeal is accepted, I will provide a more detailed Academic Plan regarding this matter.
Missing such important deadlines is quite unlike me and when to my horror I realized I had missed the deadline I was deeply embarrassed. Such a mistake will never again occur on my part. Unequivocally I have no greater desire in the world than to complete my degree at Queen¿¿s and I will not allow any circumstance to come before this again. I will not let Queen¿¿s down.
Sincerely,
Alan Townshend-Carter

Petition Letter: 19 July 2016
ALAN TOWNSHEND-CARTER ACADEMIC APPEAL,
To whom it may concern,
I am requesting the following:
1) A waiver for the requirement to withdraw for a minimum of three years;
2) The previous offer made (ref: Sue Blake email 6 May 2016) to drop CLST 410 and change my HIST 250 grade to a Credit standing to be enacted, and;
3) That the following failed courses from the 2013-2014 academic year from my transcript be dropped:
a. ARTH 212;
b. CLST 340;
c. CLST 214;
d. CLST 330, and;
e. CLST 331
I believe that these requests are justified due to multiple mitigating factors that have had a negative impact on my academic success which were beyond my control.
The primary factors that have influenced my inability to successfully complete my studies were two underlying and undiagnosed medical conditions, these conditions being major depression and ADHD. I have suffered from the symptoms from birth, but I was reluctant to go for treatment because I concluded that these symptoms were normal amongst everyone. Following the 2013-2014 academic year, I was asked to withdraw for a year. During this time, I prepared myself in techniques to better organize and manage my time and tasks. My symptoms were still present, but I never concluded that mental illness was the cause. Upon my return for the 2015-2016 academic year my conditions increasingly became unmanageable which culminated in a professional colleague strongly advising me, and accompanying me to psychological treatment at LaSalle. In April, I was diagnosed with major depression. Later, in June, my doctor also diagnosed me with ADHD. Presently I am being medicated for both conditions and receiving counseling. These impairments have been a constant companion of mine throughout my life, and as such these impairments were a major detriment to my academic success throughout my undergraduate career.
A secondary factor was my worries over the illness of my partner. In late February a tumour was discovered during a routine medical exam. In March her doctor excused her from the final week of classes to have a biopsy preformed to evaluate the severity of the discovery. During the exam period, the results came in saying that she urgently required immediate invasive surgery. From February to June she required my emotional and mental support. Naturally such a significant, and potentially life-threatening prognosis hanging over the head of someone who is extremely significant to me (and who I hope to have a future with) is a hard pill to swallow, and with my depression, preparing for and writing exams was nearly impossible ¿¿ leading to poor academic results.
A final ¿¿ albeit minor ¿¿ factor was my work obligations. I¿¿m an Infantry Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, and have been serving this country for over five years as a means of financially supporting myself. I realize now that my work obligations were interfering with my studies ¿¿ a mistake on my part I have since corrected.
My attached academic plan outlines how I will address the above concerns. In short; I have been receiving treatments for my major depression and ADHD, my partner is now healthy and preventive treatments have begun, and my work has become my lowest priority ¿¿ I will cut my work hours down and take fewer courses to maximize academic success. I¿¿d also like to drop the above mentioned courses to boost my GPA in order to achieve the mandatory GPA level to graduate by the end of this academic year.
In closing after receiving treatment I am very hopeful for the future. All I want to do is go back to school and complete my undergraduate degree. I have worked very hard to overcome my impairments and if given another chance I will not fail Queens. I will meet the high standards not only demanded by Queens but by myself and above all else succeed.
Sincerely,
Alan Townshend-Carter (06337630)

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: 19 July 16
ALAN TOWNSHEND-CARTER ACADEMIC PLAN
To whom it may concern,
Bellow is my plan for the continuation of my studies for the 2016-2017 academic year.
Course of Study
¿¿ I wish to complete my BAH Classics degree plan. I require 24 classical studies units to fulfill the requirements of my degree. Of these 9 must be 300 level or higher and the further 15 are from the CLST, GREK, LATN or CLST_Subs.
Full Time and Part Time Status
¿¿ I intend to take four courses per semester in order to achieve my goal of completing my degree. Four courses per semester will allow me to take a less than normal course load. A lighter course load will enable me to focus all my efforts on doing the best I can in those courses.
Strategies for Success
¿¿ I intend to follow my course of medication in accordance with the instructions of my doctor. Also I shall be continuing with counseling from a professional outside of Queen¿¿s to help me deal with my mental illnesses.
o So far, I have reacted extremely well to the medications and counseling that I have been receiving. This will continue throughout the year. Presently I am able to focus for the first time in my life and my doctor and counselor have said that I am managing my depression extremely effectively.
¿¿ I will cut my work hours to the bare minimum so that my studies are truly my first priority.
¿¿ I will consult Queens¿¿s Disability and Mental Health Services on strategies on how to best succeed academically while dealing with my conditions.
¿¿ In regards to the extenuating circumstance involving the health of my partner, she has since been cleared of illness, is safe and healthy, and is excited for my to return to my academic studies and graduate as a Queen¿¿s alumni such as herself.
