Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing because I would like to drop my grade in MATH 121 from the summer of 2015. I understand that the 21-day window for an appeal has passed, however I believe that the the circumstances I will outline may provide an explanation as to why this course of action was not explored sooner.
I have struggled with my mental health since high school, but it really took a turn for the worse at the beginning of my first year at university. At the end of first year (which for me, was the beginning of the summer term in which I re-took MATH 121), I attempted to seek help. However, my family doctor refused to refer me to a mental health professional, and my family¿¿s insurance benefits weren¿¿t enough for me to seek a private mental health service. I chose to continue in the course because I didn¿¿t see any other option ¿¿ I needed the course for my program. Unfortunately, attempting to pass a course in a subject that I already struggled in, and therefore brought me a lot of anxiety, without treating the symptoms I was already dealing with proved to be extremely challenging and I failed.
These same mental health challenges are the reason why I didn¿¿t seek an appeal sooner. I struggle with both anxiety and depression related symptoms, and two of these symptoms are lack of motivation and avoidance. I avoided dealing with the issue because I didn¿¿t know what to do. The more I struggled with MATH 121, the more anxiety I felt about it. I still wasn¿¿t able to find appropriate treatment for the issues I was dealing with, and felt that without treatment, I couldn¿¿t face the issue I was having with the course.
In January 2016, I sought help again, and have been meeting with a psychotherapist since then. This has been extremely helpful, particularly with my anxiety symptoms. We¿¿ve done a lot of work on managing my symptoms and while I am still not 100, I believe that I have made an improvement. I am more productive, I am more involved in the community, and I have seen a reduction in my anxiety on a day-to-day level. My therapist is the person who pushed me to get through my fears and get this appeal done, so while it is late, the fact it is happening is testament to my recovery.
My plan is to continue my sessions with this therapist until I feel that I can manage my symptoms completely independently. I am currently exploring the possibility of changing my major program, and it¿¿s currently looking quite likely that I will be able to make the switch. This switch means I will no longer require MATH 121, however if for some reason I do end up needing to take it again, I believe that with the mental health resources I have in place, I stand a much better chance at passing.

Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.

Regards,

Kendra Baker
