Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,

I am appealing to waive the 21-day period in which a student must appeal to have grades waived while leaving the credits earned. First, I was not aware that there was an option for this and therefore did not act on it when I should have. The reason for this is because adjusting to first year university was incredibly hard for me; I did not involve myself with other people, and classes were difficult to regularly attend as I always felt behind in the studies and did not know what was going on in the course at that time. My personal and mental struggles reflected in my grades and I would like to try and right some of the wrongs I let happen. Second, my struggles in Queens continued with me into second year; since I did so poorly I had to pick Sociology as my major even though I did not take it in first year. My second year then became me trying to catch up by taking first year Sociology along with other electives since I could not take other Sociology courses during Socy122. This was disheartening because I never had a passion for Sociology and I felt as though I was still behind because of my problems during first year. On top of that, during second year I began working to put myself through school and trying to find the balance between school, work, and life was incredibly difficult. Lastly, I am now in the middle of picking a different major and really figuring out what it is I want to put my focus on during my time left at Queens and I have been shown this opportunity to hide the poor grades I received when I did not know where I was going or what I wanted. Now that I am being shown more of what Queens has to offer me I would like to involve myself more so I do not miss any other opportunities like the one to waive grades. If the 21-Day appeal period is lifted I will explain more how some grades were affected more so than others.
