This is intended to appeal the Online Discussion Forum mark provided to me in this course. In the online discussion forum evaluation I received an F for failing to complete 12 comments. On the syllabus of the online course the professor writes,
You are required to contribute a minimum of 12 value-added comments to the Moodle general discussion forum by June 10 at 17:00ET. Twice a week, start a discussion thread or add comments to existing ones. Topics must correspond to/complement course content. The forum is actively monitored/moderated by the prof and TAs. Threads that do not align with or fail to add value to the course are removed at the prof¿¿s discretion.
I was on the various forums on a weekly basis, and to my knowledge there was no discussion of what was meant by General Discussion Forum. I believe that I contributed well over 12 times on all three discussion forums posting and responding to other classmates. With access to the online forums I would be able to document that I had provided more than the minimum 12 number of posts required for the online portion of this course. The other 75 of the course broken up between three evaluations I received an average mark of B-.
The course provided no interim marks to asses our completion of this requirement throughout the course, including no indication of our progress towards the twelve posts that were being required. Especially since this course only runs over a six week period, it is essential that student have the ability to efficiently know how they are standing in the course. With the ability to have seen my marks throughout the course, I would have been able to adjust my approach to the course, and post to the general forum thereby meeting the necessary requirement. The first notification that I had that a number of students had misinterpreted this decision was from a friend of mine who was also taking this summer course. With access to the online forums I would be able to document that I had provided more than the minimum 12 number of posts required for the online portion of this course. The other 75 of the course broken up between three evaluations I received an average mark of B-.
I am asking for a review of the F on the online posting component (25) of the FILM260 course. In large part because, we were not provided with an ongoing assessment of our progress in the course, and the instruction concerning posting to the general blog were not clear.
