Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,

I am entering my fourth year of the biology and psychology specialization program and I am appealing to take 9.0 units in upper year courses on Letter of Permission during the 2016-17 academic year. I am working towards a Certificate of Disability Management from Dalhousie University which consists of four 3.0 unit upper year online courses. I am registered at Dalhousie University as a visiting student to take these courses on Letter of Permission from Queen¿¿s. I have taken DISM 3010, the pre-requisite for the other three Disability Management courses, during Winter 2016. This is the first course that I have received transfer credit for. I am requesting permission to take the remaining three courses or 9.0 units in upper year courses on Letter of Permission during the 2016-17 academic year to complete the certificate at the same time as my undergraduate degree.

The courses required to complete this certificate provide an overview of the relationship between health and work with a focus on disability management. Since Queen¿¿s does not offer courses on disability management, completing this certificate will complement my Queen¿¿s degree and will enhance my employment opportunities in the future. Furthermore, the Disability Management Certificate Program at Dalhousie University meets the educational requirements for eligibility to write the National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR) licensing examinations to become a Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) or Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC). These certifications have been accredited by the International Disability Management Standards Council (IDMSC) and are certifications which I plan to pursue.

I am requesting permission to take the remaining three courses or 9.0 units in upper year courses on Letter of Permission during the 2016-17 academic year to complete the certificate at the same time as my undergraduate degree. To graduate next spring, I am required to complete 6.0 units in required courses and 12.0 units in elective courses. Since I plan to take a full course load next year, the courses that I take at Dalhousie University will be in addition to my degree requirements. If granted permission to take 9.0 units in upper year courses on Letter of Permission during the 2016-17 academic year, I plan to take one course during Fall 2016 and two courses during Winter 2017, along with appropriate courses at Queen¿¿s to complete my degree requirements and for a total of 30.0 credits.

Sincerely,
Ivy Fong
