Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am requesting an academic appeal to drop CLST 102 Introduction to Greek Civilization and CLST 103 Introduction to Roman Civilization, originally booked for Fall/Winter 2014/15.
I am a continuing full-time Queen's University staff member in Campus Planning and Development and I am also a Part-time Arts & Science student working on my BAH with a Major in Classical Studies. My first course back in academic life was CLST 129 - Introduction to Archeology, where I earned an A- and enjoyed the experience that both Professors Reeves and Colivicchi provided and was looking forward to my next course.
In mid-July of 2014 I registered for CLST 102 and CLST 103. On July 28, 2014 I became extremely ill and was put on bedrest by my doctor. After numerous medical appointments and tests I was diagnosed with cancer and I began extensive treatments. The effects of this illness were debilitating and I was experiencing some cognitive impairment and only left the house to attend medical appointments and treatments.
My communications to the Human Resources (HR) department was over the phone as I don't have a computer or internet access at home. I called HR regarding canceling these courses as I was unable to do so at home and I understood that the course would be taken care of and that when I was ready to resume back to academic classes I could contact the faculty department to take this course. I was very ill and was only able to focus on just trying to get through and recovery.
Had I understood that my courses had not been officially cancelled on SOLUS back in 2014, I would have contacted my boss, a co-worker, or a family member with computer and internet access and provided them with my NetID and password to log onto SOLUS and have one them cancel the courses for me before the deadline had passed. (HR had taken care of my course tuition for this course through the staff Tuition Assistance Program).
My illness period lasted from July 28, 2014 until January 3, 2016. After several weeks of being back to work on a gradual basis, I slipped and fell on January 27, 2016, breaking my ankle and lower leg which had me off work for another 3 months. I returned back to work on May 9, 2016 and back to full time hours by the beginning of June, 2016. During this illness I met with many doctors and underwent many tests and treatments. I took physio and cognitive tests, and worked with a physiotherapist and occupational therapist for months to get me ready for my return to work. For my second absence I returned to the same physiotherapist to work on work on walking skills.
This month I decided to start looking into Classics courses and seeing if the course outline had changed at all since I had been away and when I went onto SOLUS I saw that the CLST 102/CLST 103 courses were listed with an F.
After speaking with Academic Advisor Kathryn Morrisey, she indicated that I would need to submit an Academic Appeal to get this course dropped. As per her recommendation, I am also attaching a letter from Human Resources as supporting documentation of my extenuating circumstances.
As a lifelong learner, my hope is that I will be able to continue with my academic endeavors part time with the Classics program here at Queen's University. Both CLST 102 and CLST 103 are core courses, and I am requesting that the courses be dropped so that I can take these courses in the next academic year for Fall/Winter 2017/18. I would like to continue to take at least one 3.0 credit course each fall and winter until I am able to graduate. I have been working at Queen's University since 2004 and hope to be able to work and continue my academic pursuits here until my retirement in 2035. If I am able to complete my BAH, I hope to someday also pursue my MA at Queen's University as well.
