Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing the Faculty's decision that I must withdraw from Queen's for one year.
Throughout the school year I became overwhelmed by the academic adjustment from high school to university. Unfortunately, my grades suffered because of this. I did not develop my time management or organization skills. This resulted in poor work and lack of preparation for tests and exams. During my first semester I became very sick when multiple essays and assignments were due for a number of my courses. Due to the overwhelming stress and my sickness I neglected to notify people of my situation and did not ask for help, resulting in me failing to complete major assignments. I negatively reacted to this stress because I did not know how to handle it. In turn, this stress had caused me to put off my responsibilities, creating a pattern that was difficult to break. As well, receiving negative feedback from some of my work also made me feel disheartened, further worsening my work ethic.
In addition, I found that I was not motivated by my political science course, which I had originally intended to major in. When the academic year ended I enrolled in summer courses to bring my GPA up, in hopes of returning to school in the Fall. Throughout the summer I worked on my time management and developed a much better work ethic. I had taken three courses this past summer term which helped boost my GPA to above the minimum requirements for withdrawal. In addition to taking three summer courses I also worked a part time job to help finance my education; it is for this reason that there is room for improvement on the grades I earned during the summer months.
Due to my increased GPA I hope to have my academic standing reconsidered. If given the opportunity, I would return back to school more motivated than I have ever been. It is my dream to graduate from Queen's University and I am willing to put in as much hard work necessary to achieve this goal.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Academic Plan:
i. I intend to register for four courses each semester and 2 courses during the summer months. I believe I will be able to effectively manage my time with these course loads. I am also considering a part time student status.
ii. In the past when struggling with the workload I did not speak with a professor or academic advisor and express my concerns. If I become overwhelmed in the future or face a challenging situation I will speak with someone who can help me with this problem.
iii. In terms of organization and time management, I will attend the workshops offered by Queen's that assist in time management, learning strategies, how to prepare for a multiple choice exams and procrastination. In addition, I plan to organize all due dates of assignments on a calendar each semester so I can plan my time accordingly.
iv. I intend to allocate study time in the library for each of my courses every week.
v. I have decided to focus my studies on media related courses such as film. Although I was unsuccessful in this course in the past due to the fact that it was not my projected major resulting in not enough time being put into it. Over time, and a lot of thought, I have decided that this is the educational path I wish to pursue. I plan on retaking first year film and refocusing my my attention onto film and media, with hopes of achieving a higher grade in order to follow this path.
vi. Stress was a major factor that contributed to my academic issues this past year. I did not know how to effectively deal with it and my academics suffered. In the future I plan to use all the resources Queen's has to offer such as the programs I listed above, my professors and my academic advisors to help me surpass any overwhelming obstacles I may face.

Amendment to Appeal 2587
Relevant Petition: 2587
New Information: To the Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to waive the 21-day deadline in which a late appeal can be heard regarding my requirement to withdraw for one year.
When I had received the notice of my academic standing I had currently already been enrolled in three summer courses in an attempt to boost my GPA. Due to my participation in these courses I had neglected to submit an appeal within 21 days of my notice as I did not know how the outcome of the summer term would affect my GPA. As well, I was unaware that I would would be required to submit an appeal as I did not feel that my situation fell under the circumstances for an appeal. Furthermore, by the end of the term, I had successfully completed all my courses and had gotten my GPA above where it needs to be for a requirement to withdraw for one year. In turn, when I spoke to an academic advisor after I had received my final grades for the summer term, they had suggested that I submit an appeal.
I have already submitted another appeal in regards to my requirement to withdraw from Queen's University for one year and I hope that it is able to be reviewed and that my academic standing can be re-evaluated, with my new GPA acting as a factor in the decision.
