Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing you today to request an extension to complete my course work in RELS 268, RELS 354, RELS 224, RELS 368 and HIST 214 on medical grounds.
As you may know, I have been battling severe anxiety and depression over the past several years.
Third year at Queens was a very challenging year for me. I had a rough first term as I was started on new medications at the beginning of the term. Throughout the fall I worked with my psychiatrist to adjust the medications. This process takes its toll, both physically and emotionally. I was also living with a new housemate whose mental illness negatively impacted my own.
My family has been very supportive and have encouraged me to try different forms of therapy to improve my functioning and quality of life. I had regular Facetime appointments with my psychiatrist and began CBT therapy. My doctor encouraged me and supported my continuation of my studies despite my difficulties. He also encouraged me to participate in other activities in Kingston as they are essential for my well-being.
During the year, I acted as the Vice President at Hillel. This organization is very important to me as it engages Jewish students at Queens in a multitude of religious, social and interfaith activities. It also allowed me to think about topics learned as a religion major in an applicable scenario. The experience that was the most helpful last year was working at the campus pub. It helped to provide me with structure (as I had several shifts per week) and forced me to be social despite many times when my mood was off.
During the school year I often found it difficult to get out of bed in the winter, concentrate on studies and write assignments and tests. Despite this I continued to battle my depression and anxiety by doing as much as I possible could.
Over the summer I began seeing a new doctor. This is the first time I feel a strong connection with a doctor, and actually feel like I am making progress. I am able to notice this progress in an academic setting, as I am no longer having panic attacks when I am close to a deadline. This is important to me as I have a strong interest in course material, and enjoy learning new things.
This past summer has been positive for me in many respects. I have completed two online French courses as well as course work from four of my outstanding third year programs. I also worked full-time and earned money for school. I am feeling supported by my family and physician and am optimistic about the future. I truly believe that being able to manage this heavy workload over the summer is an indication of my functioning in the year to come.
During the upcoming academic year, I am planning on finishing my degree. I will have a reduced course load since I completed summer courses this year as well as last. This is very important to me and is driving me to succeed in the upcoming year.
I plan to keep connected with the Queens community this year as I have been appointed to be the Judicial Affairs Committee as Deputy. I will also be co-chair of the Queen¿¿s University United Way Campaign.
I continue to work hard to be healthy and successful. Than you again for your past support. I am committed to successfully completing my studies.
Sincerely yours,
Marlee Satok
