Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,

I am writing to waive the 21-day deadline to allow for my appeal of the three year withdraw from Queen¿¿s University due to extenuating circumstances to be processed.

I am writing to inform the Associate Dean of Studies of the extenuating circumstances which inhibited me from being able to submit my request for appeal prior to the deadline of June 16th, 2016. Due to my mental health difficulties that have impaired my ability to properly do work and function in both social and academic spheres since Fall 2015, my ability to keep up with deadlines has been significantly affected and therefore left me unable to submit my appeal prior to June 16th.

Since April 2016 I have been heavily focused on fixing and managing my mental health difficulties which include bouts of major depression, anxiety, agoraphobia, all of which stem from an overall issue with Bipolar Disorder II. This mental health issue has just this summer become known to me which is why I struggled heavily this past year academically and socially and was therefore unable to seek out for help prior to April 2016 and is also the extenuating circumstance for why I could not submit my appeal prior to June 16th, 2016. As of this summer however, I have began managing my mental health difficulties and will continue to do so this school year so to not fall off on my responsibilities anymore. Since the beginning of September 2016, I have discussed my plan of action with my family, friends, and counsellor and have come to the conclusion that my best bet for maintaining my mental health is to be enrolled in school as it will give me a sense of purpose at a time in my life in which a sense of purpose has been difficult for me to actually believe in. With the help of continued medication that I¿¿ve began to take since late August 2016, to combat the negative symptoms of Bipolar Disorder II and the major episodes of depression I have experienced this past year, in addition to counselling, and a strong support group both here and in my hometown of Burlington, I believe reenrolment into Queen¿¿s University will be best for my mental health going forward. It is for this reason that I am writing to waive the 21-day deadline to allow for the subsequent submission of my appeal to the requirement to withdraw from Queen¿¿s University for three years.

Regards,
Alex Strang
