To Haley Everson,
I am writing this letter of appeal because it has become necessary for me to live with my family in Toronto while completing my fourth year university. I seek permission to attend four (4) full year courses at the University of Toronto as a visiting student during this up coming academic year (2014-2015).
I have been diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) by my family physician. Official documentation confirming this diagnosis will follow in a few days. This disorder impacts my mental health during the late fall and winter months and consequently my winter grades suffer. Even while I have vigilantly and responsibly implemented the professionally suggested methods of dealing with this form of depression, I have yet to meet with improvements.
As you may recall, in 2012 - 2013 I found myself living in an escalating and untenable situation with a roommate who suffered from a serious mental illness. By the time of final exams, the situation had spiraled out of control and this roommate ultimately burned down his family house. As you may be aware, the Provost, Dean Wolff, the Dean of Arts and Dr. Mike Condra became involved. While living in this traumatic environment, I experienced bouts of depression, which my family doctor diagnosed as SAD. This traumatic event was likely the catalyst that precipitated this depression. This traumatic event also impacted my grades quite significantly.
The up coming academic year is my final year of undergraduate studies. It is imperative that I do well ¿¿ I need to make up for the dip in grades I experienced due to the events of 2012-2013. I need to deal with my Seasonal Affective Disorder and control the associated depression. I believe that my academic performance will be positively affected by moving home and living with my supportive family in Toronto, and where I have immediate access to my health support network. It is essential for me to have prompt access to my family doctor in Toronto when required.
I ask for your consideration of my request to attend four full year courses at the University of Toronto for the academic year of 2014 ¿¿ 2015.
