Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies,

My name is Jake Perkins. I am currently a second year undergraduate student majoring in economics, and am appealing to add MATH 121 after the academic deadline. The exact course I wish to add is MATH 121 online section 700, offered by continuing and distance studies.

During my first year of studies, I completed MATH 121 and due in part to severe illness during October of 2015, I finished with a very disappointing grade. As an economics major, there are several upper year courses I wish to take which require a certain minimum grade in a calculus mathematics course. As it currently stands, my grade is below the minimum threshold. My plan for this academic year was to take linear algebra (MATH 111) as a supplementary mathematics course, and to retake MATH 121 and achieve an acceptable (and hopefully excellent) grade in the summer of 2017. This way, I would be eligible and fully prepared to take my desired third year economics courses. I have recently discovered that due to family related extenuating circumstances beyond my control, I will not be able to take MATH 121 in the summer of 2017. Receiving this information has led me to establish an alternate plan of action. Because MATH 111 is completely supplementary to my economics studies, and a certain minimum grade in a calculus mathematics course is a requirement for me to further my studies, I have decided to appeal to add MATH 121 after the academic deadline. If this appeal is successful, I will drop MATH 111.

Respectfully yours,
Jake Perkins

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: To the Associate Dean of Studies,

If this appeal is successful, I have a fully prepared academic plan that I am going to follow. Because I took MATH 121 last year, I know how the material must be analyzed and studied in order to obtain a high grade. I have the advantage of possessing a knowledge of the material beforehand, which will be a huge positive factor in catching up on any work I have missed up to this point in the term. In the past, I have discovered that they best way to develop a good understanding of mathematical concepts is by doing practice problems. Using this knowledge, I plan on devoting a certain number of hours every week to completing practice problems, on top of regular note taking and assigned readings. Last year, there were some units in MATH 121 which gave me some difficulty. This time around, I plan on being much more proactive about attending instructor office hours and tutorial sessions if I am struggling with these challenging sections. If this appeal is granted, I am absolutely certain that with a disciplined execution of my outlined plan, as well as a great work ethic, I can achieve an exceptional grade in this class.

Respectfully yours,
Jake Perkins
