Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies) of the Faculty of Arts and Science:

I am appealing to drop the course CHEM 398 (Fall, 2016).

I am requesting to drop this course as I have been having issues with my mental health all semester, and in the past week my situation has become much worse. I have found myself unable to effectively cope with stress in all areas of life, which has taken a toll on my ability to effectively complete the work required for my courses. I have also found myself unable to focus for long periods of time or to find motivation to push myself to complete required tasks. The course has I am appealing to drop has been a large source of academic stress throughout the semester, even before my health worsened. I have found the work load and time commitment for this course very hard to keep up with, and these factors have also prevented me from performing to the best of my abilities in my other courses. For the sake of my continued well being and my success in other courses, I do not think that remaining enrolled in CHEM 398 would be a wise choice.

I understand that it is past the drop deadline, but this is my first time dropping a course and as such I did not realize that there was a hard deadline as to when courses could be dropped. Also, my mental health became much worse after the November 4th deadline had gone by. I have an appointment booked with a counsellor at the La Salle Centre on Monday, and I will submit documentation of this after meeting with them.

This course is not directly required for completion of my degree, but I am required to take an additional 300 level lab course in addition to my course courses. CHEM 398 was intended to be my additional 300 level lab course. However, this experience has helped me come to the realization that I am not suited for lab courses, and I am planning on changing my academic path, which means I would no longer require this course in order to graduate.

In addition to switching to a different major, I am hoping to develop a plan with the help of the counsellor I will be seeing to ensure that in the future I can maintain academic success while dealing with my mental health in an appropriate manner.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Martin Caruana
