Associate Dean (Studies)

Dunning Hall, First Floor

Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,

My name is Nicholas Wright. I am currently enrolled in a fifth year in the Department of Geography as a BScH student.

I am requesting this academic appeal to remove all courses taken in the winter term of 2016 from my transcript. I am requesting this due to a family emergency and subsequent physiological challenges which occurred over reading week that caused me to be unable to complete the course work for the second half of the semester which resulted in my failing of all five courses. This affected my academic performance in such a way that I failed to attend all exams scheduled for the winter term exam season as well as failing to hand in projects that I had already completed. I had struggled with mental health issues before as my fall transcript can attest, with failing 5 out of six courses in that term as well. In order to remedy this I had been in the process of receiving professional support, which included meeting with my family doctor over the winter break and regularly scheduled appointments with counselors on campus. This carried over until the family emergency struck and I stopped attending them, which resulted in my further academic decline. I understand that this was not the most responsible course of action as I was not proactive in addressing my issues, however it is what happened. The extenuating physiological challenges proceeded until the beginning of May when I moved home for the first time in five years in order to focus on becoming a healthy individual again. This progress has taken the form of weight loss and an open family discussion with regards to my emotional state. My future plan for success involves making up the failed courses by taking a fifth year, which I am currently in, limiting my extracurricular activities in order to focus on academics and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I have also met with and am in regular communication my programs academic advisor (Dr. Beverly Mullings) in order to maintain my plan for graduation in the spring of 2017. I also have plans to meet with an on campus counselor for the remainder of the year in order to have the support needed to maintain my academic goals and progress made over the summer. Currently with the failed course in my transcript, my GPA will be too low in order to graduate in the spring of 2017. To this end I am formally requesting your support to remove the winter 2016 term from my transcript.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
