Petition Letter: To Arts & Science/ Education Faculty,
I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for this current 2016/2017 year. This appeal is for Bio 102 which was not dropped before the drop timeline.
My extenuating circumstances that have made me come to this withdrawal decision is a persistent illness. Monday, October 17th was the first day of my illness which consisted of very swollen lymph and tonsillar tissue and a high fever. I was seen by Health Services on two separate occasions where I was assessed and the necessary blood work, mono test and strep test were all done. I was given a 7 day course of Pen V antibiotic which did not clear the infection. I was unable to attend my classes and lectures during this time and finally went to the Kingston General Hospital Emerg on Wednesday, Oct 26th. Once again I was tested for strep, mono and blood work was taken. I was administered fluids via IV due to dehydration as my throat was so painful eating and drinking liquids was excruciating. They also gave me an IV antibiotic and was sent back to residence with a stronger prescription of Doxycycline. My parents agreed that I needed to return home to recuperate so I left for home on the 28th and returned back to Queen¿¿s for classes on Nov 7th. Upon returning I was overwhelmed with anxiety of how much work I had missed. I contacted Vickie Andrews who helped me drop Chemistry, in hopes I could handle the workload easier. Unfortunately, I did not feel that I could continue with my courses and achieve the grades that I wanted so with my family's support I withdrew from Queen¿¿s.
After being home for a week I developed the same symptoms all over again with a very severe fever and a 4cm swelling on my left lymph node. I have seen my family doctor twice this past week and he advised I be seen at emerg(Nov 30th) and since, have seen an ENT on Dec 1st and have been put on another round of antibiotics.
My goal is to feel better and am considering a University closer to home where I can achieve my undergrad and would like to have the option to return to Queen¿¿s for my teaching degree. Everyone at Queen¿¿s was extremely helpful and understanding both at the wellness clinic and the academic advisors I spoke with. My health is my priority and it is with great sadness that I could not complete my first year.
