To Whom It May Concern - Associate Dean:
I am writing this letter to appeal to drop the course STAT 263 after the deadline.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of this semester, and I had to go home and take care of her for a little over a week after she had surgery - which ultimately put me behind in all of my courses. I have managed to regain my high academic standing in majority of my classes - however, since I already do not have a strong math background, I have been quite behind in the STAT 263 course ever since the first month of classes. I chose not to drop the course because, initially, I felt as though I would be able to catch up and the thought of having to retake it was a daunting one. At this point, however, having the exam around the corner - it is obvious that I most likely will fail the course, and that is definitely something I do not want on my transcript.
I have been seeing a therapist since my second year here at Queen's, and have previously suffered with mental health issues. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer this semester, it made coping with my own personal issues much more difficult as I had an unusual amount of stress on my plate. I am hoping that, with your help, I can drop this course and allow myself the opportunity to try again in the future - when my mother has hopefully recovered and my headspace is a little more clear and focused. I am a student that enjoys all aspects of Queen's academic life, and one who takes pride in her work. Therefore, I truly cannot afford to get a failing grade on my transcript, as I am planning on pursuing a Master's Degree in the future.
I have attached supporting documents - both from my therapist and my family's doctor.
