Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
A. Request:
I am appealing to drop Math121 (Summer, 2016).
B. Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances
In the summer of 2016, while enrolled in Math121, I was met with extenuating circumstances which impacted my academic performance in the course. The ongoing illness of my grandfather at the start of the summer and his eventual passing in early August resulted in the suffering of my academics. My family is very close and I had a strong relationship with my grandfather. Throughout the summer, there were many instances when we thought he had reached the end, yet he would continue to hold on a bit longer. This resulted in numerous goodbyes which took a mental toll. Aside from the mental aspect, during his last few months, it was my family¿¿s priority to spend as much time with him as we could. The first time we saw a major decline was in mid-June which was around the same time as the midterm (June 17). His health continued to suffer until he passed away in early August (August 8) ¿¿ just after the final (July 27). The time correlation of his more pressing health declines with my academic evaluations resulted in a time commitment (handling his care) as well as a mourning process. His impending passing occupied large amounts of time that took away from my studies. Upon his passing, my family mourned his loss and continues to honor his life. While I miss him every day, the psychological impact I felt this summer is currently much less knowing he is at rest.
C. Future Plan
My performance in Math121 is not representative of my abilities as a student. Should my appeal be granted, I will continue to work my hardest and strive to uphold the Queen¿¿s academic standards. Initially I took Math121 with the aim of minoring in Economics. However, the ongoing nature of the situation has helped me realize my best course of action is not having a minor. This will support my future academic goals by allowing me to focus on my major in Political Studies and Certificate in Business program. Having more time to focus on those two requirements will help me achieve my goal of improving my academic standing. Being able to focus on my major without the hindrance of Math121 will motivate me and benefit me in the long run as I apply to graduate programs.
