Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to put forth HLTH 230 (Fall, 2016) as a credit standing. The final exam for this course was 50 and psychological illness beyond my control during the exam period resulted in my inability to perform to my usual standard in this course. More specifically, I struggled with severe acute anxiety in the days leading up to and during the final exam (approximately 3 days) for this course that lead to insomnia, inability to concentrate, and subsequent inability to perform on the final exam. Immediately prior to the exam, I had suffered from insomnia for approximately 40 hours in additional to physical fatigue from consistent adrenaline. I had put forth a large sum of hours toward studying for the final exam in order to improve my grading in this course since the midterm, however, the score was not able to reflect that effort. Currently, this course stands out as an outlier in my transcript and affects my GPA in a significant way.
Leading up to the final exam, I spent personal time taking walks in an attempt to relieve anxiety but I did not consult a health care professional at the time due to guilt and embarrassment. This was the first time that I had struggled with a psychological illness that affected my wellbeing and health profoundly. Since this temporary extenuating circumstance during exam period, I have been regularly seeking mental health consultations and working to develop effective coping mechanisms in response to severe acute anxiety.
Thank you in advance for your time and considerations.
Sincerely,
Grace (Shang) Yin
